Mother's Day can be every day if she's a sweetheart

What can I say, but that I started interviewing for my annual Mother's Day column a week late.

So, it wasn't the 16th after all.

Most mothers are sweethearts, a few are stinkers, and the rest do a great job.

You can't pick your mother and, unless you're adopted, she can't pick you.

My mother used to tell me, "We tried so hard to have kids." I didn't know at the time that she had suffered several miscarriages in the 1930s.

She got a stinker in me.

My older brother Rob was her favorite. He looked a lot like her deceased brothers, all of whom died much too young.

She called him Robbie. I prefe...
