Manley Olmstead was celebrating his 90th birthday with an open house at the Roseau Four Season’s Center on August 20.

LeRoy and Delores Taus were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on August 20 at the Benwood Community Center.

The Roseau Free Lutheran Church of Roseau was having a celebration of the 50th year of the birth of their congregation on August 28.

Warroad Sevens Clans Casino was celebrating their 25th anniversary on August 19-21. Kari and Billy were presenting a free show on August 19, followed by fireworks.

10 years ago – Aug. 13, 2011

Glaydon and Francha Rugland recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Tasha Englund and Jared Wika were married on August 6 at the Pioneer Farm and Village with the very esteemed Brandi Rauser officiating.

The Roseau Rams were losing girls hockey players Megan Foley (Concordia College) Emily Hallie (UND), Abby Ness (SCSU), Kya Lee (UND) and Dallas Barry (Concordia College) from the 2010-11 squad.

Katie Olson, daughter of Jerry and Dede Olson of Roseau, was in her second year on the women’s golf team at UND.

The final Yard of the Week in Roseau was the Mary and Don Ross home on 4th Avenue NE.

25 years ago – Aug. 16, 1996

Todd Peterson has been on the job since August 1 as Roseau’s new city planner/developer.

Oliver Charles Ullman, 16, Roseau, escaped without injury when his 1985 Ford Escort rolled into the south ditch of TH 11 two miles west of Roseau when he fell asleep at the wheel.

Amanda Halverson, 10-year-old daughter of Gary and Karen Halverson, was scheduled for eardrum surgery on August 16.

Roseau residents Bernie Anderson, Dale Smedsmo and Jerry Klema were the owners of Brush Island on Minnesota’s Northwest Angle. A golf course, marina and a resort complex with 44 lake homes was planned for the island.

Alvin (Bud) and Shirley Fugleberg were celebrating their 40th anniversary on August 18.

Harvey and Clara Johnson were having a surprise 40th wedding anniversary celebration on August 25 at the Roseau Free Lutheran Church.

Winners of the Polaris Scramble held at Oakcrest was the team that included Brian Norman, Perry Omdahl, Scott Johnson and Tom Marlan. Placing second was the foursome of Vance Harren, Duane Espe, Danny Goos and Carl Hanson.

40 years ago – Aug. 12, 1981

The Floyd Haugens, who farm near Badger, were the winners of the Roseau County Clean Farm Contest.

Robert KakayGeesick of Warroad recently received the Purple Heart award 36 years after being injured in Germany in the Battle of the Bulge in 1945.

Gwen Borgen of Badger recently attended the 1981 Volleyball Players Camp at the University of North Dakota.

George Wellen of Badger was pictured with a 21 pound northern he caught on a weedless spoon near Buffalo Point.

Robert and Dorothy Brinkman were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary on August 16 at the Riverside Lutheran Church in Wannaska.

50 years ago – Aug. 12, 1971

A single-engine seaplane carrying three Roseau men crashed and exploded into a ball of fire shortly after take off at Warroad. The pilot, Harold Nurminen was badly burned. His passengers Glen Holm and Jim Butler, were less seriously injured.

Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Gustafson of Badger recently celebrated 50 years of marriage with an open house.

Young singers from Warroad; Susan Marvin, Liz Marvin and Steve Landby were part of the American Youth Band and Chorus which made a European Concert Tour recently.

Winners of the Roseau Ladies Invitational golf meet were championship flight- Donna Neujahi, 1st flight- Bonnie Pitblado, 2nd flight- Norma Haslerud, 3rd flight- LaMae Lundbohm, 4th flight- Esther Wysocki, 5th flight- Helen Mae Frethem and 6th flight- Myra Roland.

Mr. and Mrs. Val Bernat of Roseau received a telegram that a baby girl was born August 1 to Capt. and Mrs. Val Bernat of Berlin, Germany. The little girl weighed 5 pounds, 11 ounces.

75 years ago – Aug. 15, 1946

The Delmore Clinic was taking over its offices on the first and second floor in the Delmore Building next week.The building was originally built to house the Farmers and Merchants State Bank on the first floor and doctor’s and attorney’s offices on the second floor. After the bank closed the first floor was leased by the United States for post office quarters.

Rev. Elmer J. Lindholm who served the Roseau Pastorate of the Augustana Parish since 1939 tendered his resignation.

Knute Grahn of Roseau who is district Deputy Grand Master of Odd Fellows of District No. 33 was appointed director of lodge activities.

Walter Lundquist, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Lundquist of Roseau and Superintendent of the Roseau Municipal Light Plant was instantly killed near International Falls on T.H. No. 71. His passengers, Virgil Wicklander and Reuben Dahl escaped with minor injuries.

The Conservation Department brought two crates of Hungarian Partridge Chicks to be released in this section of the county.

Jadis Township pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Strandlund, were honored a week ago on their Golden Wedding.

Florence Brenhaug was the bride of Raymond M. Johnson. They were married at her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Brenhaug’s home in Roseau.

Iden James Magnusson and June Janis Ganyo applied for a marriage license on August 13.
