Malung Scandinavian Fest

October 2, 2021

An enthusiastic and dedicated team of volunteers in Malung has been working for several months preparing for the first Malung Scandinavian Fest on October 1 and 2 at the Malung Community Center (MCC), located at 41071 Malung Street. According to Linda Hedlund, co-chair for the event, “It is going to be a fun event for the entire family. There will be Scandinavian-oriented entertainment, crafts and products for sale, demonstrations by vendors, cultural food sales, games and book readings by authors for young folks and a supper both evenings.”

Malung is acclaimed by many foodies as the place to go for a Scandinavian fare. Sharon Lund, who is leading the dinners team, shared that the Friday supper will be Norwegian potato dumplings and Saturday will be Swedish meatballs. To add to the culinary experiences, there will be Swedish pancakes and Norwegian waffles served during the dinner hours on both days. If you are partial to baked goods, “Don’t forget to stop by the bakery and purchase some goodies to take home,” stated Janet Hetteen.

Although the Swedish and Norwegian influences are strong in Malung, the Fest will also feature Iceland, Denmark and Finland. Most notably will be the raffle that offers a basket of items for each country. Everybody is invited to dress like a Scandinavian even if you aren’t one!

A new outdoor picnic shelter has been built on the grounds to offer a respite from the unpredictable Minnesota weather. It’s a place for people to meet and visit. Several volunteers observed that is something Scandinavians like to do, and they do it especially well here.

This is a fundraising event for MCC. Don Miller reflected, “Our goal is to raise funds for building repairs, maintenance, and operating costs so we can continue to grow educational events and activities. We want to further our mission to enhance the interaction and cultural awareness for residents and others in the surrounding areas. Most importantly, this is an opportunity for everybody to have fun.”

As we say goodbye to summer and hello to a new season, Malungites hope you will make this Scandinavian Fest your next Staycation.
