The 2nd Annual Cardboard Sled Race Olympics will be held at the Malung Community Center on Sunday February 13. Registration is at 1 p.m.

"Our first cardboard sled races were in February 2020," reports Don Miller. "We had registered ten sleds at 1 p.m. and thought that's a pretty good turn out for the first year! By 1:30 p.m. we had a total of 34 sleds registered!"

Sled race categories are: Snowflakes: 3rd grade and younger, Snowballs: 4th grade to 12th grade, Slo-Birds: everyone else.

"Thick heavy cardboard works best when building a cardboard sled," advised Don. "Only cardboard, tape, string, rope and glue may be used. Malung Mountain is a "friendly mountain", it's not like sledding down Bemis Hill, but we want to make sure everyone has fun and stays safe. Helmets are recommended but optional and there is no registration fee.

This years awards will be for Coolest Sled, Distance Award, Wipe Out Award and Top of the Hill Award."

A dozen or more volunteers have pitched in to organize the Sled Race Olympics at Malung Mountain.

"Don came up with the idea, then many volunteered to make the event happen," explained Curt Kjaer. "Thats how our community is. There were several creative cardboard sleds at our first race like Mike

Hetteen's vintage snowmobile. Don built two sleds, including a helicoptor. I built three in case someone came to the race without a sled."

A light lunch of sloppy joes, hotdogs, chips, lemonade, hot chocolate and coffee will be served after the races, free will donation.

Inspiration may be found by viewing malungmountain2020a on YouTube where a delightful cupcake looses her frosting and Curtis Kjuer's bus wheels take off on their own. Most heartwarming moment is a young sledder who although didn't travel far, happily raises her arms in celebration!
