5 years ago – Mar. 18, 2017

Roseau County University of North Dakota students who received degrees during Winter Commencement were Afton Cameron, Madison Hanson, Elizabeth Housker, Michael Tangen all of Roseau; Brennan Kirkeide of Greenbush; Justin Brunk and Chelsea Krahn of Warroad.

Elanor Snow was celebrating her 95th birthday on March 26 at the Four Seasons Center in Roseau.

The Roseau Ram Girls Hockey team was honored as the Minnesota Section 8AA Academic Champion for the 2016-17 season. Senior captains were Maddie Jerome, Mack Bergstrom and Lindsey Santl.

10 years ago – Mar. 17, 2012

Garrett Berg was the new Deputy Sheriff for Roseau County.

A baby shower for Dawn (Skime) Koch was to be held on March 24 at Bethesda Lutheran Church of Skime.

Former Roseau baseball players; Kevin Erickson, Tyler Orgon, T.J. Erickson and Jared Nelson were currently playing baseball for the Itasca Vikings at Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids.


Jordan Bryce Sharp and Brittany Leigh Koenig were married on March 10 at Sacred Heart Church.

25 years ago – Mar. 17, 1997

Megan Taylor of Roseau ended her basketball career with her name in the Minnesota record books- first as the girls athlete who broke the record of Janet Karvonen, and then as the holder of the overall point total in high school basketball at 3,300.

David Olson, a Roseau Polaris employee broke the Guiness Book record for 24-hour distance on a snowmobile. He traveled 1,216 miles before he had to stop at the 16.5 hour mark when the carburetor froze up.


A baby shower for Devin Aron Dostal, son of Cari and Tom Dostal, was to be held on March 22 at the Tanya and Jason Hanson residence in Roseau.

February birthday honorees at the Four Seasons Senior Center were Gordon Rugland, Irvin Johnson, Jennie Arneson, Agnes Dahlquist, Dorothy Nelson, Mary Doyle, Edith Larson, Pearl Moen, Evelyn Dokken, Ellen Brown and Oscar Eklund.

Roseau high school hockey players named to the Section 8A boys team were Neal Vatnsdal and Trevor Hammer. Warroad high school players named to the team were Matt Ulwelling, Tanner Martel, Adrian Hasbargen, Mark Carlson and Justin Ferguson.

40 years ago – Mar. 17, 1982

Some 690 people picked up free five-pound blocks of cheese in Roseau County last week and another cheese distribution to qualifying people was to be held in the Roseau Senior Citizens Center on March 19.

Jay Ness of Roseau and Scott Knutson of Warroad were named to the WCCO Prep Parade All-State Hockey Team of the Year.

Marine Lance Cpl. Eric A. Besserud, son of Jean E. Besserud of Oak Manor in Roseau, reported for duty with the 7th Motor Transport Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California.

An open house to honor John Bergstrom on the occasion of his 90th birthday was to be held at the Kenneth Tangen home in Wannaska on March 20.

Emily Desrosier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Desrosier of Roseau, was a member of the Augsburg College Choir.

Mr. and Mrs. Tim Fevold announced the birth of a son, Ryan Timothy Fevold, on March 11.

50 years ago – Mar. 16, 1972

Members of the board of directors of the Roseau Civic and Commerce Association were Norm Hayes, Mrs. Wayne Nelson, Paul Harms Jr., Mrs. Agnes Stoe, Dennis Odegaard, George Larson, Bob Graveline and Ted Koivu.

A former Warroad hockey player, Alan Hansleben, who is now a defenseman for North Dakota-Sioux, was named top WCHA rookie of the year.

Mr and Mrs. Curtis B. Hauger of Roseau announced the birth of a daughter on February 25.

Mr. and Mrs. James J. Bernat of Roseau announced the birth of a son on March 5. He was named Mark James.

Sgt. and Mrs. Warren Hagen of SHAPE headquarters at Mons, Belgium are the parents of a baby girl, Paula Renae, born on March 9.

The movie showing at the Roso Theatre was Walt Disney productions “$1,000,000 Duck.”

Honl’s Bakery in Roseau was advertising Raisin Bread for 34¢ a loaf.

75 years ago – Mar. 20, 1947

The Messelt Coffee Shop, remodelled and redecorated, was to be reopened to the public on March 24.

The Salol Lutheran Church was filled with relatives and friends for the wedding of Miss Pearl V. Sjodin and Dennis R. Dahl last week.

After April 1 the subscription price of the Times-Region was to be raised to $2.50 per year.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wierschke on March 15. Mrs. Wierschke was Miss Ina Erickson before her marriage.

Light weight crystal glass tumblers sold for 2¢ at the Gambles store.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Honl announced the birth of a eleven pound son last week. They have all boys (80% of a basketball team).

Mr. and Mrs. Lorris Stennes announced the birth of a son, They now have a forward line for a hockey team.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Severson and baby were settled in their new home. They bought the Reynold Hanson farm in Wannaska.

Louis Enstrom, who returned to his home in Malung last week from Minneapolis where he submitted to a major operation, suffered a stroke which caused partial paralysis on his right side.

Bernie Meek had a big crowd at the opening of his Meek Grocery at Warroad a week ago.

O.A. Rice was able to be up and about at his home after being ill with arthritis for three weeks.
