Roseau High School graduation speakers were Ivy Braaten, Madison Lee and Jacob LePard.

The 2017 Roseau Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees for the October 8 ceremonies at the Roseau School Theatre were to be Paula (nee’ Bruss) Bauk, Mike Baumgartner, Paul Broten, Terry Gotziaman, Mark Huglen, Dana Paulson and the 1990 Minnesota State High School Hockey Champion Roseau Rams.

On May 17 Lester and Verna Grafstrom held a big “Syttende Mai” celebration at their farm in Salol.

Bicycle winners at the Roseau annual Bike Safety Day were Madison Otto and Peyton Wold.

Dean and Monica Halvorson were celebrating their 25th anniversary on May 30.

The Softball Rams won their playoff opener against the East Polk North Stars 15-5. Senior catcher Abby Huss and senior pitcher Madi Lee were selected to the Agassiz Valley All-Conference Team and junior second baseman Hannah Nelson was named to the Honorable Mention Team.


10 years ago – May 26, 2012

Richard Anderson was the new barber in Roseau. He opened the Roso Barbershop in the building that also houses the Brickhouse Bar and Grill.

Roseau Special Olympians competing in the Special Olympics Spring Track and Field Event at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls were Madysen Stallmo, Levi Acker, Kenna Rhen, Mitch Klein, William Sizemore, Wynter Reandeau, Jenna Hamm, Colten Lundbohm, Dylan Olson, Anna Krahn and Lacey Wyer.

Winners of the bicycles at the Roseau Police Department Bike Safety Training on May 21 were Jaci Rugland and Dayton Dybedahl.


Molly Lee of Roseau was the recipient of a Faculty Scholarship from Concordia College, Moorhead.

Roseau Green won their own boys golf tournament with a 305. Casey Anderson of Warroad was medalist at 73, Will Czeh of Roseau was second at 74 and Joe Vatnsdal of Roseau was third with 75.

The Roseau girls golf team won the EGF Invitational with a 380. Gracie Olson of Roseau was 3rd with an 87.

25 years ago – May 24, 1997

James Skime, 8-years-old, was thrown from his bicycle on impact with a pick-up and landed in the ditch on the east of County Road 9. He was listed in critical condition due to severe head injuries.

Anna Grafstrom was chosen by the Roseau American Legion as their Girls State candidate. Hannah Dieter was chosen for the Citizenship Award.

Walter Alten, Sr. was celebrating his 80th birthday with an open house on June 1 at the Walter Alten Jr.’s home in Wannaska.

Tim Schneider, son of Joe and Diana Schneider of Roseau, was admitted to North Dakota State University “with distinction”.

On the homefront at Oakcrest Golf Course, Mike Pelowski, local druggist, shot a hole in one on number 7, which is 160 yards long. It was witnessed by his brother Brian, who, incidentally had a hole in one 25 years ago and also Keith Markstrom.

Coach Terry Taylor’s Roseau High School baseball team was 14-4 with one game to go before playoffs. Eric Lins was the pitching leader with a 5-1 record. Batting leaders were Aaron Degerness, Mark Fabian, Terry Stoe, Scott Petrowski, Garrett Lee, Peter Erickson and Matt Erickson.

Roseau Rambler Wrestling Club award winners at their annual banquet were Brian Arneson, Spencer Wrightsman, Hans Grafstrom, Mark Erickson, Kyle Bodell, Cody Kofstad, Jacob Waterworth, Mark Haugen, Chris Olson and Tim Fugleberg.

At the 15-school Roseau boys golf invitational Roseau placed second with a 309, following State Class AA contender Bemidji who had a 308 total. David Lundbohm led the Ram team with a 76, Kevin DeJong had 77, Squash Lundbohm and Scotty Baumgartner had 78s while Erik Fabian had a 81 and Jesse Bergland an 86.

40 years ago – May 26, 1982

Arbor Day was observed in Roseau with the planting of trees at the site dedicated as a Veterans Park on the East side of the South Bridge. Planted were green ash, white spruce and Canadian Red Cherry trees.

Roseau High School Principal Ron Kockelman and Roseau High School Counselor Pete Groschupf won “Outstanding Administrator of the Year” and “Outstanding Counselor of the Year” honors in northwestern Minnesota.

Beth Brinkman of Roseau was selected to represent Roseau County in the Regional contest at Northwest Dairy Day.

The Roseau girls golf team won first place at the East Grand Forks Invitational. Roseau’s Carlene Jackson was runner-up with a 96. Roseau girls shot the following scores: Cathy Czeh-100, Cheryl Byfuglien-106, Teresa Wensloff-111, Susan Wahlberg-112 and Sharlene Culp-108.

Mr. and Mrs. Deland Broten of Roseau announced the birth of twin sons, Joshua and Joseph, on May 18. Grandparents were Mrs. Mabel Broten and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nelson of Roseau.

Roseau students who were recent Northland Community College graduates were Constance Czeh, Ronald Forbister, Dale Lasneski and Cynthia Lofton, and Warroad students Kenny Milender and Roger Olimb.

Jeffrey Pastir, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Pastir of Roseau, was chosen as a marshal at the UND commencement exercises.

50 years ago – May 25, 1972

A write-in campaign produced a surprise in the school board election in Roseau when Pat Moren went in with 184 write-in votes, winning over ballot candidate, Maynard Braaten.

Local Dairy Princess candidates were Nancy Frosaker, Marjorie Sorteberg, Colette Berry and Brenda Mickelson.

At a meeting of the Geological Society of America on May 12, it was determined that the old Roseau Lake bottom was formed by a glacier not by a meteorite which may have struck the earth in prehistoric times.

Roseau High School had 134 candidates for graduation and Warroad High School had 58 eligible for diplomas.

A cow on the Raymond Kotta farm, near Salol, gave birth to triplet calves.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark J. Jenson of Roseau announced the birth of a daughter on May 13.

Mrs. Richard Arneson of Roseau was the second winner of the Vagabond Weekend as part of the promotion sponsored by the Roseau Merchants and the Times-Region.

Members of the Wannaska skit at the Roseau County 4-H Share the Fun Contest were Colleen Eggen, Roxanne Eggen, Cindy Oslund, LeAnn McFarlane and Nancy Beito.

Winners of 50 gallons of gas at Denny’s Standard Service were Howard Hites, Dale Jensen, Walter Hellquist and Nina Lund.

75 years ago – May 29, 1947

Ralph Olson was discing in his field near Wannaska and uncovered two heads of Indian pipes. They were made of stone, well shaped and styled. The Olson farm adjoins that owned by Arnt Lundemo. That place was where Chief Mickinock stayed when he was out that way.

Former Warroad Drayman Joseph Theodore LaChappelle passed away on May 23 after being in poor health the past eight years.

A hundred relatives, neighbors and other friends gathered at the home of Mrs. Pete Johnson at Wannaska on her 76th birthday anniversary.

Allan Hetteen, Stanley Hetteen and Paul Grand took themselves to Morris Point and went fishing there.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Rugland of Roseau announced the birth of a daughter.

Winners of the 440 Relay at the high school girls Play Day held in Roseau on May 23 were Beatrice Eastby, Nancy Harris, June Hansel and Gertrude Erickson.

Mrs. Malena Olson, pioneer of Malung township, closed her eyes in death at the age of 87 at the family home after suffering declining health for four years.

A parcel shower was given for Mrs. Maynard Erickson at the Erickson home in Malung.

Getting in some fishing at Rocky Point were Mr. and Mrs. Wally Gunnarson, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Drown, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Eastman and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Dieter.

Joyce and JoAnn Dunham, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Dunham were honored guests on their birthday at the Maynard Dunham home.
