"There were fish to be caught during the season opener, but fishermen had to work for them," reports Aaron Phillipe of True North Guide Service, in his fifth year of guiding on Lake of the Woods. "It was a little slow with ice still on the lake and water temps between 39 and 44 degrees. Walleye need about 45 degrees water temp to spawn. I would say fishing is about two weeks behind this spring. Water was so high on the Rainy River, I had to cancel five scheduled sturgeon fishing trips in April."
