75 years ago… Roy Novotny won at Sheep Day

 


5 years ago – June 24 2017

On May 16 Brenna (Lang) Johnson, a 2001 RHS graduate, donated a kidney to her brother Isaac Lang, a 1999 Roseau High School graduate. Their parents are John and Mary Lang, former Roseau residents.

Roseau High School trap shooters Brett Dale and Beau Keagle placed in the Top 100 out of 1,100 shooters statewide during the spring league and advanced to the State Meet.

Roger Allen was hired as the new Division Coordinator for the Roseau ODC.

Ashlyn Nicole Kartes and Caleb Wyatt Mellstrom were united in marriage on May 27. Ashlyn is the daughter of Lynn and Sheila Kartes and Caleb is the son of Christopher and Nikisha Mellstrom.

10 years ago – June 23, 2012

The 8th annual Make a Difference for ALC Walk/Run will be held at the Roseau Community School track on July 14.

Roseau students named to the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dean’s List for the spring semester were Haley Eastman, Ashley Hamann, Ryan Kartes, Krysten Nelson, Emily Severson and Amelia Wulff. Warroad students named to the Dean’s List were Maria Kotz and Jenna Thompson.


The Roseau Scandinavian Festival Treasure Hunt winners was the Casey Loken family from Juneau, Alaska. Great-grandparents to this crew of five are Joel and Irene Olson of Roseau.

Orin and Carolyn Lee were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 30 with an open house at Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau.

Local musicians Jeremy Erickson (35 years of age) and Oneil Foster (Age 73) were recently called home by God.

Melanie Sikorski was the winner of $1,000 given away by Roseau County Ford.


25 years ago – June 21, 1997

Recent Roseau High School graduate Megan Taylor received the High School Girl’s Award at the 1997 Sports Salute Gala sponsored by Midwest Sports Channel on June 19.

The Times-Region and KJ102 announced their first annual charity golf scramble to be held on July 19 at Oakcrest Golf Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark and SoAnn Jensen announced the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Kiley Elizabeth, bride-to-be of David Allen Vejtasa. The couple became engaged on Valentine’s Day and their wedding was to be held on July 5 at the Pioneer Farm and Village.

Sheri Kruger was the winner of a gas grill given as the grand prize in the Rams Fastpitch Fundraiser.

40 years ago – June 23, 1982

Candidates for Fourth District Commissioner were Duane Comstock, John H. Spina, Jerome Helstad, Merle Goos, Duane Espe and Raymond Geroy.

One man was killed and two injured in a single-car accident near County Road 9 and County Road 18 when the driver lost control of the vehicle which went in the ditch and hit an approach. Dead at the scene was Elwyn Kjallberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kjallberg of Wannaska. Ricky Barber and Marvin Norstebon were injured.

The six finalists for Roseau County Outstanding Senior Citizen were Mrs. Esther Snustad, Mrs. Ann Burkel, Mrs. Florence Evans, Clarence Melby, Obert Wammer and Lawrence Moe.

Two Roseau girls competing in the 1982 Miss Teen of Minnesota Pageant to be held in St. Cloud in July were Mary Huglen and Shelly Nystrom.

Jeff Dahl of Roseau was chosen for the Minnesota Lutheran All State Lutheran Choir.

50 years ago – June 22, 1972

Verner Anderson marked his final week of his employment in the Roseau Post Office. He had served for 36 years.

Five calls were made by the Roseau Welcome Wagon. Newcomers to the village were Kathleen Hull, Junieve Svoboda, Sandy and Mike Baumgartner, Linda and Bob Emery and Peggy and Carson Hedlund.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ostby observed their golden wedding anniversary in their home in Roseau last Sunday.

Mrs. Dennis Vatnsdal was the lucky winner of the sixth Vagabond Weekend. She brought along her sons Scott and Cory to claim her prize.

Conrad Lommen, Roseau teacher and Boy Scout leader, died suddenly of a heart attack on June 18, as he was helping Boy Scouts load canoes on vehicles to go on a canoe trip in the Northwest Angle Country. He was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by the Scouts.

Elizabeth Marvin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cal Marvin of Warroad, was named to the Academic Honors List at Fergus Falls State Junior College.

75 years ago – June 19, 1947

Roy Novotny of Badger was the winner of the Sheep Shearing Contest at Sheep Day held in Greenbush. An estimated 3,000 people attended Sheep Day.

Folks who came from Telemarken, Norway or their descendants, gathered in Badger for a two-day reunion.

Dalfolket had another successful reunion last weekend with the event taking place in the Malung Hall.

Mrs. T.E. O’Rourke of Roseau was the new District Legion Auxillary head.

Members of the Pencer 4-H Club one act play were Loretta Schell, Donna Wicklund, Doris Mae, Mona Comstock, Marvin Monsrud and Marlin Erickson.

With a rainfall of 4.24 inches in a week beginning June 3 and ending June 11 the Roseau River went on a rampage which reached a flood stage crest of 18.4 feet at the dam.

Earl Knockenmus of Salol spent last week in Roseau at the home of his mother, Mrs. Laura Knockenmus, who is employed at the Honl Bakery.

Miss Joyce Pearson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Axel Pearson of Pencer was married to Maynard Dammen of Roseau at the Mission Covenant parsonage.

Two dozen oranges were on sale for 29¢ at Hartz Super Market. Two pounds of bananas sold for 27¢.

Young people who were recently confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Roseau were Marie Gross, Frederick Parduhn, Jackie Baumgartner, Ruby Good and Leonard Goos.
