It all stemmed from my mom's homemade summer school for us. She didn't make us do a lot; we read for half an hour each day, we did math (including fun math games that I became very good at), and we had French lessons, which she taught. She grew up in Canada, so she easily learned how to speak French by going to a school where they only spoke French. If you were caught speaking in English in the halls, you'd be scolded. In no other circumstance would my mom actually want to learn a language on her own time.
