Crochet Thanksgiving Gobbler Hat

Materials Needed

- 5.5 mm ( I ) crochet hook

- worsted weight yarn in brown, orange, red, white and black

- yarn needle

Abbreviations

Hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together Sc2tog – single crochet 2 together Special Notes:

Ch 1 does not count as first hdc.

First stitch goes in the same stitch as the slip st (except on earflaps)

At the end of the round, join with slip stitch to top of first hdc, not the ch 1.

If you are not comfortable with the magic circle, you can substitute (ch 4, join with sl st to first ch)

Child Size

Make magic loop,

Rnd 1: ch 1, 9 hdc in ring, join with sl st, pull tail to tighten loop (9) Rnd 2: ch 1, (2hdc in each hdc), join with sl st (18)

Rnd 3: ch 1, (hdc in next hdc, 2hdc in next hdc), join with sl st (27) Rnd 4: ch 1, (hdc in next 2 hdc, 2hdc in next hdc), join with sl st (36) Rnd 5: ch 1, (hdc in next 3 hdc, 2hdc in next hdc), join with sl st (45) Rnd 6: ch 1, (hdc in next 4 hdc, 2hdc in next hdc), join with sl st (54) Rnd 7: ch 1, (hdc in next 8 hdc, 2hdc in next hdc), join with sl st (60) Rnd 8-19: ch 1, hdc in each hdc, join with sl st (60)

Do not fasten off, but rather pull up loop as shown below. After earflaps are complete you will attach your orange yarn here.

Ear Flaps

Skip 9 st from back joining seam, attach yarn

Row 1: ch 1, hdc in next 11 st (11)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 7, hdc2tog (9) Row 3: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (9)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 5 st, hdc2tog (7) Row 5: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (7)

Row 6: ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 3 st, hdc2tog (5) Row 7: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (5)

Row 8: ch 1, turn, hdc 2 tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog (3) Row 9: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (3)

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Skip 18 st from left earflap, attach yarn.

Row 1 : ch 1, hdc in next 11 st (11)

Row 2 : ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 7, hdc2tog (9) Row 3: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (9)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 5 st, hdc2tog (7) Row 5: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (7)

Row 6: ch 1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 3 st, hdc2tog (5) Row 7: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (5)

Row 8: ch 1, turn, hdc 2 tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog (3) Row 9: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (3)

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Now, attach yarn with sl st in back joining seam as shown below, sc around edge of hat.

3 sc in corners of earflaps as shown

Braids

Cut 12 – 40 inch strips of each orange, red and brown (total of 36 strips)

Insert 6 strips of each color through the 3 stitches at the bottom of the earflap

Braid the strips to approximately 11-12 inches, knot off and trim ends for neat edges.

Eyes

Make 2,

With Black, make magic circle,

Round 1 : ch 1, 8sc, pull tail to tighten, insert hook in top of first sc, join white yarn with sl st (8)

Round 2 : ch 1, 2 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around (16)

Fasten off, weave in ends, but leave long tail for sewing.

Nose

With orange,

Row 1: ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each st across (4)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st across (3)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st across (2)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc2tog (1)

Ch 1 and sc around the edge of the nose, putting 2 sc in each corner.

Fasten off, weave in ends, but leave long tail for sewing.

Beard

With red,

Ch 21, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2sc in each st across (40) *Note – beard will spiral.

Fasten off, leave long tail for sewing.

Pom Pom

Holding orange and red yarn together, wrap around 3 inch piece of cardboard 50 times. Pull off of cardboard and fasten tightly and securely with brown piece of yarn.

Cut loops, trim and fluff pom pom.

Pom pom can be made using any desired method, as big or small as you prefer.

Attach pom pom, eyes, nose and beard.

Weave in all ends and enjoy!!
