Vital Fitness owned by Josh Wilhelm, was opening in Roseau in the former Expression’s Shoe Store on January 8.

Winners from the December 7 and December 14 Roseau Holiday Fantasy drawings were Kim Brichacek, Steven Roseen, Elaine Luoto, Kandy Efta, Dave Reed, Selma Nordstrom, Lee Skoien, Jaeden Johannesson and Paula Bakke.

The partners of B+B Plumbing, Kean and Harold Beito, were the recipients of the “Friend of 4H” award from Roseau County 4H.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest honor given by Lions Club International Foundation, was awarded to Wannaska Lion Rodney Wulff.

Roseau City Lighting Contest winners were General: 1st place- Alex McMillin, 2nd Place- Vance Dahl, 3rd place- Kurt Dahlquist; Themed: 1st place- Scott Habstritt, 2nd place- Vickie Smith and 3rd place- Earl Erickson.

10 years ago – Dec. 29, 2012

The final Roseau Holiday Fantasy winner for 2012 was Larry Rislov of Badger. He won $1,000 in Roseau Dough.


Minnesota State University-Moorhead awarded degrees to local students Megan Anderson, Ryan Kartes and Amelia Wulff, all of Roseau, during its fall commencement program.

The Lady Rams hockey team lost to the Warroad Warriors 1-4. Bailey Holter scored Roseau’s lone goal.

City of Roseau Christmas Lighting Contest winners were Businesses: 1st place- Annies Trading Post, 2nd place- Phillip Sallberg Dentist, 3rd place- Quilt S’more; General: 1st place- Lowell Peterson, 2nd place- Ryan Lisell, 3rd place- Steve Beals; Themed: 1st place- Jim Bernat, 2nd place- David Smith and 3rd place- Clay Hahn.


25 years ago – Dec. 27, 1997

Fire destroyed the old Golden Motel building in Roseau. The cause was determined most likely to have been caused by a light bulb in the basement.

Jana and Randall Nelson of Roseau announced the birth of a son, Scott Orvis, born on November 30, 1997.

Suzane Zarling and Eric Shaugabay of Warroad are the parents of a son, Gage Robert Shaugabay, born on November 30, 1997.

Roseau Area Hospital+Homes, Inc. recently recognized Sharon Wensloff and Mavis Lerum for 35 years of service. Receiving 20 year service awards were Patricia Truscinski, Joyce Ulvin, Nancy Tviet, Susan Lisell, Marsha Hagen, Gail Hallie and Annabelle Halvorson.

Roseau Christmas Decorating Contest winners were Theme: 1st place- Don and Roberta Brunell, 2nd place- Tim and Charlotte Erickson, 3rd place- David and Colleen Olson, 4th place- David and DeAnna Hovda; General: 2nd place- Tom and Linda Hovorka, 3rd place- Bernie and Nancy Burggraf and 4th place- Kent and Kim Langlie.

The Roseau Ram boys hockey team lost to Elk River 2-3. Jessie Modahl scored both the Roseau goals.

The Ram boys basketball team overcame a 18-point deficit for an exciting 42-40 win over International Falls. Isaac Lang headed the top scorers for Roseau netting 15 points, followed by Tristan Sjaaheim and Justin Kjos with nine apiece. Dustin Mertens chipped in seven.

40 years ago – Dec. 29, 1982

Don Tuttle has been promoted to manager of the Owatonna Penney Store and Ron Bengtson, who had been in management training in Roseau, was promoted to manager of the Roseau Penney Store.

Fresh ground beef sold for 98¢ per pound at Hites Red Owl in Roseau. Valdor Grade “A” Large Eggs sold for 59¢ per dozen.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Steffens of Warroad announced the birth of a son, Nathaniel David Steffens, on December 2.

The Ram hockey team defeated Hallock 9-2. Chad Johnson led scoring with a hat-trick followed by Larry Goos and David Drown with two each and Lyle Dahlgren and Brian Pastir racked up singles.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Evans are the parents of a son, Andrew Jonathan, born on December 22.

50 years ago – Dec. 28, 1972

Marvin Lumber and Cedar Co. in Warroad announced their largest profit-sharing total in the 14-year history of the plan was given to employees when checks totaling $375,698.92 were issued to employees.

A new electronic sign, which flashes time and temperature at the Citizens State Bank in Roseau, was recently installed for public information and convenience.

Ten cans of Brimfull, carbonated, regular and diet soda pop sold for 79¢ and Red Owl potato chips (12 oz. size) sold for 39¢ at the Red Owl Store.

The Puck Rams lost to a very good International Falls team 4-1. Mike Burggraf scored the only Ram goal.

75 years ago – Dec. 25, 1947

Mrs. Bertha Hegland of Roseau adopted Giuliano Angelo Angeline, ten-year-old Italian boy, thru the “Foster Parents’ Plan for War Children”.

More than 800 children were on hand to greet Santa Claus last Saturday in Roseau. The afternoon started out with moving picture entertainment at the Roxy Theatre. Santa met the children at the theatre and led them down Viola Avenue to the Christmas Tree at the intersection of Viola Avenue and Pearl Street.

Local students who were recognized with football awards at Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston were Leroy Swanson, Allan Magnusson and Duane Comstock of Roseau; Leroy Swanson of Wannaska; Dale Erickson of Malung; and DeWayne Wahlstrom and Leroy Peterson of Warroad.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Dunham of South Wannaska announced the birth of a son on December 18.

The Roseau Cloverleafs received their baptism in hockey this season over at Hallock and got a trouncing 13-2 at the hands of the Hallock States-Dominion League team. Bennett was in goal for Roseau.
