The Warroad hockey boys’ post-season run commenced with a commanding 5-1 victory over St. Cloud Cathedral, on Wednesday, March 8. But on Friday, the Warriors decided to throw a little drama into the action, defeating Orono in the semifinal round, by a 4-3 thrilling double-overtime final tally. With their staggering, unblemished 29-0-1 record on the line and the Class A title in their sights, the Warroad boys were determined to beat a very formidable Spartans squad, no matter how many overtime periods they might need…and it was two. Senior defender Erick Comstock sealed the deal for Warroad, with a back-door goal just 16 seconds into double overtime, on a pass from teammate Jayson Shaugabay. Warroad’s first goal, however, was a bit of a serendipitous sort, which got them on the scoreboard just 1:01 into the game—thanks to the “bouncy” boards at the Xcel Energy Center. Junior Peyton Sunderland took a shot that went high and hard off the end boards, bounced back, and caromed into the back of the net. That was Sunderland’s first goal of the season. Hoping that magical momentum could carry them through Saturday’s championship game versus Mahtomedi, the Warrior boys battled the Zephyrs for the title…and this one again went into double overtime. But this time, the Warroad bunch fell to Mahtomedi, 6-5, at Xcel Energy Center. That gave the Warriors an awesome 29-1-1 overall record for the season.
