75 years ago… Local man struck by lightning

45 years ago – June 22, 2019

Eldridge “Al” Buffum, 68, of Roseau passed away peacefully at his daughter Antoinette’s home in Canyon, on June 12 after a short battle with a very aggressive cancer. He owned the Roso Theatre for many years and was known for his generosity.

Newell and Carol Broten of Roseau were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on June 14.

Eva Grafstrom of Salol celebrated her 1st birthday on June 13 with her family and really enjoyed her cake.

The Roseau Clay Target Team captured conference second place honors in both varsity and junior varsity at the Alexandria trap shooting championship. The junior varsity team members were Joe Shaw, Evan Peppel, Julian Vig, Henry Finney and Axel Dahl. The varsity team members were Tyson Monsrud, Ethan Tesarek, Beau Keagle, Jonathan Hosaluk and Owen Moser.

10 years ago – June 21, 2014

The quilting ladies (Shirley Burian, Eva Gregerson, Marie Eklund, Vivian Peterson, Marlene Isane, Marvel Pesek, Sophie Warne, Carol Forst, Dorothy Didrikson and Sonia Heggedal) of Faith Lutheran Church have been busy making quilts for 2014 Badger High School graduates, Shanyce Bishop and Tina Watson. They also make quilts for local families in need, nursing homes and for distribution by the Roseau County Sheriff’s Department.

“String”, a fun, romantic comedy was to be performed by the Warroad Summer Theatre on June 26 and June 29 at Warroad High School mini-theatre. Starring in the production were Dyanna Grondahl, Ryan Modahl, Adrianna Korgel, Matt Stein and Anthony Quinn.

Jazmine Dirks of Roseau, daughter of Dave and Paula Dirks, had 11” of her hair cut at Carla’s Book Your Look and was donating it to Locks of Love.

Dr. Katie Peterson (nee Bendickson) joined Falk Dental as an associate on June 2, 2014. Dr. Peterson is the daughter of Joan (Ken) Olson and the late Vern Bendickson and is a 2003 graduate of Warroad High School.

Randy Lofstedt was celebrating his 80th birthday on June 29 at the First United Lutheran Church in Roseau.

Dave and Elaine Lund were celebrating their 50th anniversary on June 29 at the Warroad Community Center.

Roseau golfers competing in the State AA Golf Tournament held at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course on June 10-11 were Josee Lundgren and Will Czeh.

25 years ago – June 19, 1999

Dr. Cindy Drost was the new dentist at Dr. Lorris Vatnsdal’s practice in Roseau.

Roseau Girl Scouts pictured making outdoor skills belts in the Roseau City Park were Ashley Brateng, Danielle Miller, Erin Foley, Sara Erickson and Rachel Klamar.

Connie Creviston, Customer Service Representative at Farmers Union Insurance in Roseau, recently passed the Property Casualty Insurance Agents examination. She is now licensed in the State of Minnesota as a Property Casualty Insurance Agent.

Aaron Hokanson, son of Gary and Barbara Hokanson of Roseau, was named to the dean’s list for academic excellence at the University of Minnesota in Duluth.

Named to the Dean’s List at St. Cloud State University were Dawn Meier of Badger and Katrina Lisseth Horner and Thomas Ronald Lund of Warroad.

Recognized at Messiah Lutheran Church for being active as church women for 50 years or more were Helen Thompson, Ann Skrutvold, Bonnie Pitblado, Lola Langlie, Hazel Peterson, Eldyne Erickson, Ardelle Snare and Phyllis Odegaard.

July 18, 1999 was to be Rudy Billberg Day at the Roseau Airport. The Roseau City Council officially added the name Rudy Billberg Field to the Roseau Municipal Airport to honor the local aviation pioneer.

Members of the Roseau boys golf team that placed 2nd at the State meet were Jesse Bergland, Nic Juhlin, Jake Brandt, Erik Fabian, Luke Erickson and Adam Pavek.

40 years ago – June 20, 1984

LaRae Carlson, daughter of Leonard and Ivadelle Carlson of rural Salol, was crowned Northwest Dairy Princess at Dairy Day held in Thief River Falls.

A Warroad man, Dorrance A. “Doie” Johnston, 22, was fatally injured in a two car accident on June 16 on East Lake Street.

Esther Snustad and Myrtle Franklin are the only two charter members of the Roseau Garden Club still living in this area.

Edelia Herling was last weeks winner (the 10th week) of $100 in “Roseau Dough”.

Winners of the Four Seasons Senior Center essay contest on “My Grandparents” were: 1st place-Kelly Roseen, 2nd place-Peter Livingston and 3rd place-Iris Salmonson.

Forrest Frederick Ammerman, Jr., Roseau and Kristi DeAnn Haugen of Roseau made an application for marriage on June 13.

Mr. and Mrs. David Dahlgren of Roseau announced the birth of their son, Aron David, on June 14. He was welcomed home by a sister, Jenny.

Hitting a hole in one on the sixth hole at the Oakcrest Golf Club last week was Steve Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Ross of Roseau. Witnessing the big happening were Chris Gotziaman and Mike Ross.

Lee’s Fleas were the team leaders after three weeks of play for the Oakcrest Men’s Golf League. Team members were Gary Ross, Steve Dahl, Brian Pelowski, YB Magnusson, Don Hayes and Steve Bergland.

50 years ago –June 20, 1974

The Roseau City Council instituted two hour parking on Main Avenue from 3rd Street North to 2nd Street South, on Center Street to one block on each side of Main Avenue and on Second Street North for one block on each side of Main Avenue.

The Roseau School Board approved a half-time teaching contract with Mrs. Helen Lunos for elementary music instruction.

A Grand Forks man, William F. Rendell, sports director at KNOX radio, was seeking to buy KRWB radio in Roseau.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Kvarnlov announced the birth of a daughter, Jodee Michelle Kvarnlov, born June 13 in the Greenbush Community Hospital.

Michael Scott Habstritt, Roseau, and Natalie Gay Flaten, Pinecreek were married on May 25 at Pinecreek.

Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Solom, Deaun, Steven and Carmen returned home after enjoying a two week trip to California.

Nancy Beito, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arne Beito of Wannaska, was accepted as a student at the University of Minnesota Technical School, Crookston.

Mrs. Delbert Santl and son Bryan of Salol were released from the Northwestern Hospital of Thief River Falls and Bryan was welcomed home by brother Ryan.

75 years ago – June 23, 1949

A charter authorizing the formation of a Marine Corps League detachment at Roseau, to be known as the Norlin-Groven Detachment, was issued. It is the eleventh Marine Corps League detachment established in Minnesota and its initial membership is composed of honorably discharged Marines residing in Roseau and vicinity.

Roseau County rural schools came within ten days of a perfect attendance record this year, with the 700 pupils setting the best record Roseau County has ever enjoyed.

Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Haaby of Roseau got a pleasant surprise when they received a clipping from a Kalamazoo, Michigan paper with a feature article on their son, Lawrence who was honored as a “vital” teacher.

Approximately 400 ring-necked pheasants were to be released in Roseau County on June 28. They would be released in crates of 30 in the Roseau and Greenbush area.

Ernest Klema, Roseau farmer, was instantly killed when struck by lightning as he and his friends, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nelson and William Baumgartner, all of Roseau, were fishing off Rocky Point on Lake of the Woods. The others escaped serious injury.

The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Erickson of Ross was baptized in Melum Church. He was given the name Edgar Steven.

Miss Phyllis Setran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I.B. Setran, became the bride of Dennis Odegaard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Odegaard of Malung.
