Happy Fourth of July!

Be sure to eat well.

One Fourth of July saved me.

It was probably in 1991.

I am the world's worst cook, and my daughter was my severest critic.

We were starving.

Autumn was out West to visit relatives, and she should have taken April, who glared at some of my futile culinary attempts.

You can only eat so many grilled cheese sandwiches and hotdogs.

Then I got a call from Donna Rose asking if we'd like to join the Roses and the Hovdas at the gravel pit below Bemis Hill around noon that day.

"Sure, what should I bring?"

My favorite hotdish was cold baked beans.
