50 years ago… Otto Linder was the Oldest Man at the Old Settler's picnic

Bethesda Lutheran Church in Skime was celebrating its Centennial next week.

Steve Bouton of Roseau had a catch of a lifetime while on a fishing trip in Saskatchewan, Canada. He caught a Lake Trout which weighed 58.6 pounds, was 51.25 inches in length and the girth measured 33 inches.

On a very special Wednesday afternoon on July 3 the late Allison Marvin, an extraordinary young woman who died way too young on August 28, 1992, was remembered fondly during the dedication of Allison Park in Warroad. Allison is the late daughter of Jenine Bjerk and Jake Marvin.

The 2019 Roseau County Outstanding Senior Citizen Volunteer Award Winners are Carol Holland and Dennis Smedsmo of Roseau.

10 years ago – July 12, 2014

RJ’s Place in Roseau had a new name and a new owner. The business which is now owned by Peggy McCourt was renamed The Pour House Bar and Grill.

Elizabeth “Liz” Lund is the new Roseau County Assessor.

The 2014 Roseau County Outstanding Senior Citizen Volunteer Award winners are Harriet Heinen of Warroad and William “Bill” Wagner of Greenbush.

Taylor Hedlund of Roseau and Joseph Olson of Warroad were among the 543 students graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College on June 1.

Elizabeth Rigstad of Roseau, Abigail Erickson of Warroad and Brady Wilmer of Roosevelt were named to the 2014 Spring Semester Dean’s List at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Dell and Erlys Hedlund were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on June 26.

A 90th birthday celebration open house for Alve Lund was to be held on July 23 at Oak Crest Senior Housing in Roseau.

Cliff and Jeanine Fevold were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house on July 20 at their home 2 miles east of Roseau.

The team of Lundbohm Accounting has the lowest score so far in the Oakcrest Women’s League. The leading ladies were: Christine Reese, Lisa Vacura, Charissa McDonald, Sara Lundbohm, Misty Lundbohm, Jeanne Wurzbacher and Melanie Thingvold.

25 years ago – July 10, 1999

The Make A Difference 5 and 10K Walk/Run to fight ALS will be held on July 17 and Art in the Park at the Pioneer Farm will be held on July 17 also.

Quentin and Emilie Grittner were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house on July 18 at the Deb and Keith Haugen home.

Ernest and Ida (Danielson) Novacek were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on July 18 at the Four Seasons Center in Roseau.

The Family Chiropractic Center- sponsored men’s golf team won the first half of the season championship with a total of 462 points. Members of the winning team were Matt Roadfeldt, Jeff Pelowski, Mike Pelowski, Todd Wensloff, Brad Zoeller and Mike Skoien.

Ann and Scott Leverington of Roseau announced the birth of a daughter, Erin Marie, born June 28, 1999. Tracy and David Borowicz of Salol are the parents of a daughter, Kiley Janelle, born June 28, 1999.

40 years ago – July 11, 1984

The three Roseau County women who are competing for the Twelfth Annual Roseau County Senior Citizen of the Year were Thilda Johnson of Roseau, Lydia Lillemon of Greenbush and Velma Sonsteng of Roseau.

Darrell Courtright recently sold his outdoor power equipment line to Dale Smedsmo and Earl Anderson, owners of D&E Sports Shop.

A new business, Preferred Contracting Inc., has begun in Roseau by two local builders and suppliers. Bob Row and Harris Holmgren have begun the business.

Larry and Donna Kovar, owners of the “Dairy Queen/Brazier” store in Roseau, announced the introduction of new product line: “Queen’s Choice” premium hard ice cream.

Fred and Lee Sorensen announced the addition of Pete Kruse to the sales department of Sorensen Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Roseau.

Steven David Meek was born on June 23, 1984 to David and Lynn Meek of Lake Township.

Employees of Arnold’s Department Store in Roseau were Steve and Sue Butler- owners and Stephanie Rykken, Peggy Skoglund and Ruthann Svir.

Penny Marie Eastman and Jeffrey Dean Erickson were united in marriage at the Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau on May 5.

50 years ago –July 11, 1974

George Vincent was the new Immigration Inspector at the Roseau Port of Entry. Otto Wagner, a Roseau County native, was hired as a relief Immigration Inspector at the Pinecreek Port of Entry.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dorwart of Roseau announced the birth of a son, Michael Erwin Dorwart, born on June 26.

A former Roseau man, Clair Hamilton, invented an electronic furnace control which won first place in the Electronics and Chemistry Division of the Minnesota Inventors Congress.

Denise DeFrates, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. DeFrates of Roseau, was named to the dean’s list at Augsburg College Minneapolis.

John Harris of Roseau was named to the second All American golf team.

Roseau American Legion baseball team members were Bruce Foss, Doug Ammerman, Tom Erickson, Jim Backlund, Kim Swanson, David Erickson, Jeff Olson, Keith Haugen, Brian Grafstrom, Mike Stone, Sheldon Vatnsdal, Craig Davidson and Bernard Foss.

Spare ribs sold for 69¢ a pound at the Hartz Store in Roseau.

Otto Linder was the Oldest Man at the Old Settlers’ picnic held recently. He was 92-years-of-age. He and Mrs. Linder who live in Swift were married the longest too (62 years).

75 years ago – July 14, 1949

Four people narrowly escaped serious injury when their automobiles collided and careened into a ditch four miles west of Roosevelt. A Warroad man, Ingvald Olofson suffered cuts to his forehead and the other people involved in the accident, Mrs. George Sorenson, Roosevelt, Miss Marilyn Lewis, Hawley and James R. Sorenson, Roosevelt, escaped injury.

An exclusive shoe store with shoes and hose for the entire family was opening for business in Roseau in what was the Petterson Bottle Gas Co. building near Brist’s Jewelry Store. The new store which was owned by Ritter and Hobbs featured an x-ray machine to assure a perfect fit.

Grace Welin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Welin of Roseau graduated as an honor student from Glenwood Hills Hospital in Minneapolis and beginning August 1 would be employed at the Warroad Hospital.

The Roseau Commercial Club favored the circulation of a petition in Roseau and rural areas to put to a vote whether or not the county should be wet or dry.

Misses Wanita and Nora Wahl of Greenbush were new employees at the Cloverleaf Cafe.

Mr. and Mrs. Melford Olson of Wannaska were the proud parents of a daughter.

Ruby E. Grafstrom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Grafstrom of Salol and Ronald Parr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Parr of Roseau were married on July 10 in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Salol.

Avis Gislason, Roseau and Marvin Larson, Roseau were married on July 2 in the Lutheran Free Church parsonage.
