75 years ago… Every 4-H participant in the State Fair had to have a chest x-ray

The final standings of the Ladies Golf League in Roseau were 1st place- Border State Bank, 2nd place- Lundbohm Accounting and 3rd place- Citizen’s State Bank.

The last week of Men’s League came to a close with the Czeh, Wilson, Wilmer team taking home second half champs. They were to play Peace Grenades (the first half champs) for the Season Championship.

Roseau Community School was having an open house on August 28 with meet and greet opportunities and a free build your own sundae bar.

International competitors were arriving in Baudette for the World Ploughing Contest to be held on August 30- September 1.

10 years ago – Aug. 23, 2014

Polaris celebrated its 60th birthday in Roseau.

On August 4, Kyle DeMolee marked his first day on the job as the new Roseau County Emergency Management Director. Mr. DeMolee was a 2010 Warroad High School graduate.

Named to the UND spring 2014 President’s Roll of Honor were Shane Omdahl of Roseau, Dayna Rothenbacher of Salol, Shelby Amsley-Benzie of Roosevelt, Hannah Bahnmiller of Warroad and Vanessa Burkel of Badger.

An open house was to be held at the Wannaska Community Center on September 6 to celebrate Layton Oslund’s 80th birthday.

25 years ago – Aug. 21, 1999

Delbert Howell retired as Supervisor of Stokes Township after 27 years of service.

Hazel Stephenson Halvorson of Roseau was recently honored as a Top Aggie by the Northwest School of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

Orvel and Harriet Olson were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on September 11 with a dinner and open house at the Roseau Senior Citizen Center.

Clifford and Ruby Holm were celebrating their golden anniversary on August 29 at the Rose Free Lutheran Church of Roseau.

Mike Lundbohm was selected as the new boys golf coach, succeeding the retiring Pete Groschupf.

Tom Nikunen shot a double eagle on hole number 16, which is a par 5 and 480 yards. Tom was recognized for his feat by the State Golf Association.

Members of the Roseau Royals which qualified for the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament were Todd Wensloff, Al Vatnsdal, Mark Fabian, Garrett Lee, Steve Burslie, Brent Eaton, Chad Degerness, Terry Stoe, Brad Zoeller, Jesse Hendrickson, Stacy Warne, Mike Benke, Scott Petrowski, Eric Lins, Garrett Magner and Andy Jensen.

40 years ago – Aug. 22, 1984

For the past six weeks four Japanese girls have made their home in Roseau with host families. Hosting the girls were Allan and Carol Dallum, Norm and Mary Hayes, John and Mavis Wahlberg and Butch and Ina Baumgartner.

Dorothy Herling was the winner of $100 in “Roseau Dough”.

Douglas and Rachal Erickson of Roseau announced the birth of a son, Jordan Douglas Erickson, born on August 9, 1984.

Lawrence and Irene Moe were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on September 2 at Moe Lutheran Church.

Grand Champions in the “Floral Olympics” at the District Horticulture show held at the Roseau Municipal Auditorium were Shirley Andol and Betty Mohrbacher.

The Roseau Area Hospital District consisted of four doctors in Roseau- R. Brummer, J. Delmore, A. Stoe and R. Herseth; and two doctors in Warroad- M. Clark and R. Hale.

Citizens State Bank sponsored a Ladies Golf Tournament at which second place honors were shared by Carol Hanson, Bonnie Pitblado and Jan Row and first place was earned by Donna Baudler.

The Chain Saws won the JC Youth Ball playoffs. Team members were Daren Storey, Jeremy Hedlund, Troy Halvorson, Mike Hulst, Todd Hedlund, Mark Hulst, Jason Wensloff, Todd Wensloff and Kevin Lund. Coaches were Dean Halvorson and David Rosenkrans.

50 years ago –Aug. 22, 1974

Pharmacist Bob Novotny was pictured holding a box of Dr. Goudy’s Magic Linament which he found in the building in which he opened his new pharmacy in Greenbush. He is the son of Mrs. Blanche Novotny of Badger.

Dr. Arne Melby is now in practice with Dr. L.H. Klefstad at the Greenbush Clinic.

Kindergarten teachers in the Roseau School District this year were Mrs. Luella Erickson in Roseau and Mrs. Clara Johnson in Malung.

Mr. and Mrs. Leland Lunos announced the birth of a son, Eric Daniel Lunos, born on August 9.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ruud of Roseau announced the birth of a daughter, Bobbi Jo, born on August 10.

Gerald Leiran, Roseau, was named to his insurance company’s “Mile High Club” for outstanding sales and service.

Mr. and Mrs. Lester Otto of Roseau announced the engagement of their daughter, Vangievail Jean to Robert Byfuglien, son of Mr. and Mrs. Knute Byfuglien. A January wedding was planned.

Roseau County ladies pictured with their awards they received at the 13th District Horticulture Society flower show were Mrs. Tilford (Irene) Wicklander, Mrs. Chester (Eleanor) Snow and Mrs. John (Eunice) Lund.

A Warroad Regional Recreation Center was being planned on 20 acres purchased by the village of Warroad and was located next to the new liquor store.

75 years ago – Aug. 25, 1949

Pictured at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Roseau Community Memorial Arena were Mayor Knute Grahn, Mylo Anderson, Nick Johnson, Les Paine, Rudy Rice, John Grothe, Ray Gilbertson and Norman Flagstad.

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Krzoska of Falun recently celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. A dinner for twenty-five guests were served to honor them.

This year every boy and girl in the 4-H Club Health Competition at the Minnesota State Fair was required to have a chest x-ray.

Nickoli A. Heskin, long-time resident of the Pinecreek Community, was laid to rest after ailing for a year.

Footings and foundation are completed for the new Roso Shopping Center and the wall, which will be used jointly by the new center and the Roseau Motor Company was completed.

Bernice Brenhaug and Gene Hams of Roseau were issued a marriage permit on August 24.

A marriage application was filed on August 22 by Ernest F. Novacek of Greenbush and Ida Danielson of Roseau.

Mrs. Frank Searles of Warroad placed first with her flower exhibit at the Warroad Flower Show.

Miss Arlene Hedlund of Malung and Howard M. Brandt of Thief River Falls exchanged nuptial vows on August 20.

Roger Strandlie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Strandlie of Roseau, had to have several stitches taken to his scalp when he took a dive from the diving board at the swimming pool and collided with another boy.
