25 years ago… Terry Loken retires after 22 years of service

Celebrating their September birthdays at the Four Seasons Center in Roseau were Perry Roberts, Barb Erickson and Diane Gehrke.

A benefit for Mark Glad and Family was being held on October 11 at Burkel Lumber and Hardware in Greenbush to help with medical expenses as Mark fights a brain tumor.

Ryan Halvorson, Roseau disability support worker, was recognized for his excellence in care. He was employed by Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota. The award recognizes the top Direct Support Professionals in Minnesota.

Roseau “Athletes of the Week” were McKenzie Cole, Lelia Johnson, Amy Wensloff, Lindsay McFarlane, Jeremiah Bender and Ethan Tesarek.

10 years ago – Sept. 27, 2014

The 2014 RHS Homecoming Royalty were: 3rd Attendants- Tianna Gunderson and Aaron Krahn, 2nd Attendants- Brittany Espe and Joseph Vatnsdal, 1st Attendants- Rebekah Danielson and Brandon Pfeiffer, Queen and King- Lauren Santl and Levi Acker, and Mini Queen and King- Reese Novacek and Teagan Sorrels.

The inductees into the 2014 RHS Hall of Fame were Earl Anderson, Gretchen Anderson-Thigpen, Nancy Burggraf, Les Kvien, Kerry Taylor, Dustin Timmersman and the 1958-59 State Hockey Champions.

Celebrating their September birthdays at the Four Seasons Senior Center were Lois Losse and Lorraine Hedlund.

Most Points winner at the 13th District Horticultural Society Show were: Genevieve Michal, LaVonne Knudson, Betty Mohrbacher, Bonnie Schuh and Myrna Johnson.

Gertrude Hoglin was presented an award for ten years of volunteer services at Four Seasons Senior Center.

25 years ago – Sept. 25, 1999

Members of the Roseau High School 1999 Homecoming Royalty were: 3rd Attendants- Kari DeJong and Aaron Degerness, 2nd Attendants- Justin Oster and Jackie Vatnsdal, 1st Attendants- Margie Dieter and Aaron Espe, King and Queen- Luke Lisell and Lindsay Brummer and Mini King and Queen- Ben Vatnsdal and Ashley Larsen.

Rudy Billberg, an aviation pioneer, was inducted into the Roseau Community School’s Hall of Fame on September 19.

Sydney Mosher, daughter of Tiffany Vacura of Warroad, was pictured catching candy at the Badger Fall Festival.

On September 26 the new Altru Clinic in Roseau will be holding an open house at their new facility.

The Kaleb E. Lindquist Post #24 American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Poster Contest winners were Bonny Reynolds and Shaleah Kaml.

Angie Johnston and Amanda Grafstrom of Roseau were selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. in October.

Terry Loken retired from the Roseau Fire Department after 22 years of service.

The Roseau Ram football team defeated Pelican Rapids 40-25. Scoring for Roseau were Aaron Degerness, Justin Oster (3), Mike Sallberg and Jeradan Otto.

40 years ago – Sept. 26, 1984

Jack Grahn and Don Grahn recently sold the plumbing end of the OK Machine business to Rick Vatnsdal and Don Hayes. The Plumbing Barn opened on Highway 89 south next to OK Machine.

Diane Dorwart of Roseau had been busy creating “Dimple Darlings”. These lovable dolls which are available for purchase at Randle’s Ben Franklin are similar to Cabbage Patch dolls which are in short supply.

The Roseau Eagles were sponsoring a fund drive for Luke Grafstrom, eight-year-old son of Lester and Verna Grafstrom of Salol. Luke was seriously injured in a hunting accident on September 15.

Jim Lundbohm recently added two gasoline pumps to his convenience store on Highway 11 in Roseau. Jim’s Fishing Headquarters was now selling no lead and regular gasoline as self service only.

Pictured enjoying microwave cooked hot dogs at Prior Electric on “Moonlight Madness” were Sarah Rosenkrans, Shelly Lund, Tara Wold and Michelle McDonald.

An addition was underway at the Roseau Dairy Queen. Owner Larry Kovar said the addition would provide more seating and a more efficient cooling and heating system.

Kim Swenson was the new pastor of the First Baptisit Church in Roseau.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Frolander and Mr. and Mrs. William Provance announced the engagement of their children Jenee Lynn and James Lynn. A November 24 wedding was planned.

50 years ago –Sept. 24, 1974

The new Immigration Officer at the Pinecreek Port of Entry was Dale Lauborough.

Mrs. Melvin Brenhaug was pictured with two giant potatoes from one hill in their garden. Both weighed well over a pound.

A mysterious little bell was found on the Curtis Jesme farm near Skime recently. The little bell which appeared to have had a handle at one time and a crack beared the dates 1868 or 1878 and the words “Chiantil Fondur” which appears to be French. The Jesmes do not believe the bell was ever in their family.

Troy Krahn, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Krahn of Warroad, walked out of the woods after being lost in the woods overnight while partridge hunting. He lost his shoes somewhere in the night but had the two partridge he had shot, his gun and his dog.

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Harder of Warroad announced the birth of a son, Christopher Isaac Harder, on September 10.

Ray A. Kotta, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond H. Kotta, Roseau, enlisted in the Navy’s Delayed Enlistment Program.

Roseau County 4-H market lamb exhibitors at the State Market Show were Carla and Alma Hemmingson, Bret Brandli and Terry Oslund.

The football Rams defeated the Baudette Bears 42-20. Scoring for Roseau were Roger Grugal, Chris Skrutvold (4) and Keith Haugen.

75 years ago – Sept. 29, 1949

Rev. Ed. C. Nelson was the new pastor of the Roseau Baptist Church.

Fikkan’s Pharmacy in Roseau was opening its doors to the public in a new smartly designed building that is the latest word in drug store quarters. The grand opening was October 6-8.

Vernon Chilgren, prominent young farmer of Spruce township, was in the Budd Hospital as a result of a serious farm accident three miles east of Roseau. His trouser leg got stuck in the tractor takeoff and began winding resulting in his lower limbs being badly mangled before being released.

A 15-day search by land, air and water came to an end when the body of missing pilot Chet Brown was found on Lake of the Woods a short distance from the Landby ditch near Swift. No trace of the airplane had been found. George Berglund, Glenn Wing, Jerry Perssen, Russell Berry, Milton Ostby and Lorris Stennes brought the body back to Warroad.

Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Peterson was moving into their new grocery store building on East Pearl Street on October 1. It is located across the street from the present East Side Grocery.

Miss Donna Hokanson of Warroad was a candidate for homecoming queen at Bemidji State Teachers College.

Falun early settler Mrs. Hilda Christine Mattson received her death summons after a five week illness.
