50 years ago… The Simbonese Liberation Army runs thru Roseau

Roseau’s 2019 Teacher of the Year was science instructor Leif Eidsmoe, a Roseau High School 2005 graduate.

Daniel Lynn Jones, Roseau English teacher, passed away on October 30 at his home in Roseau at the age of 43.

Timothy Luverne Kofstad, longtime Roseau Realtor, passed away on November 3 at the age of 59 with his wife Janell by his side at LifeCare Medical Center in Roseau.

MSG Gary F. Estabrooks, son of Roger Estabrooks of Roseau, was promoted on October 25. He was a member of the Iowa Army National Guard.

10 years ago – Nov. 8, 2014

At the Roseau County Manufacturing Week breakfast the four Manufacturing Essay contest winners read their winning essays. The winners were Alex Pederson of Warroad High School, Sara Achen of Lake of the Woods High School, Alexis Melby of Roseau High School and Alyssa Wahl of Greenbush-Middle River High School.

New faces at Roseau High School this year were Lance Dubay, the new band teacher; Tara Kihle, a new high school instructor; Beechestore “James” Stroot, a junior; Billie Lindland, a senior; and Niles Ehret, an exchange student from Germany.

Ellie Nelson placed 32nd out of 171 runners at the State Cross Country Tournament. Weston Nelson placed 75th out of 175 runners at the meet.

25 years ago – Nov. 6, 1999

Holiday Open Houses were to be held at Bonnie’s Floral, The Quilt Hus, Golden Shears, The Gift Gallery and Annie’s Trading Post Company in Roseau.

Bill Wagner and Pat Westman won seats on the Roseau School Board along with incumbent Mary Jane Broten.

Andrew Hedlund was returning for his junior year to play hockey for the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles hockey team.

RHS junior Gavin Johnson raised $1,016.05 plus an additional $150 donation from Citizens State Bank to be used for a CHIC youth group event. He grew his hair until his large Culligan jug was filled with money. His classmate Mitch Haaby did the honors and cut his hair.

Frank’s TV Repair, owned and operated by Frank and Carol Poell, was presented with RadioShack’s Bronze Sales Award for 1998.

The four Roseau Rams selected as All-Conference players for the 1999 Volleyball season were Laura Lundbohm, Heidi Evans, Kari DeJong and Kristi Glassmann.

40 years ago – Nov. 7, 1984

A Warroad man, Robert Wennerstrand, 41, was shot in his right elbow with a 12-gauge shotgun in Lake Township in a hunting accident.

A volunteer work crew is busy restoring St. Joseph’s Church deep in the Beltrami Forest. The steeple of the church was carefully lifted off, repaired and replaced.

On November 5 four calls were received by the Roseau High School and Elementary School principal’s offices pertaining to a bomb threat. Students were directed to the Roseau City Auditorium, the Baptist Church and the Messiah Lutheran Church while the school was being searched. No bomb was found.

Terry Olson of Roseau was a member of the Gustavus Adolphus golf team which won its third straight championship on October 13.

Bennie and Anna Hammer celebrated their 55th anniversary on November 7.

The Steve Roseens were rejoicing over the arrival of a son on October 24.

Winners in the Roseau Jaycee Women’s sponsored Halloween Party were: Three and four year old costume category- Paul Carlson, Corinne Lunos and Maria Maioce; Five and six year old division- Courtney Spicer, Lindsay Pladson and Jay Hardwick; Under three category- Kelsey Spicer, Jennifer Desrosier and Angie Johnston.

50 years ago –Nov. 7, 1974

The Roseau Council set December 10 as the date for a special election to determine whether or not an on-sale liquor license should be granted in the city for the Guest House Motor Inn.

Two men who allegedly stole guns and ammunition from the Roseau Gamble Store, and who left the Guest House Motor Inn without paying their bill, claimed to be members of the Simbonese Liberation Army. They were caught in Iowa and admitted to taking the guns and ammunition and stealing the Pelowski car in Roseau.

Mr. and Mrs. Duane Olson of Salol announced the birth of a daughter, Kara Leigh Olson, born on October 27.

Jeff Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Larson of Roseau, was named All-Conference in cross country running.

Door prize winners at the Knit Shop open house in Roseau were Chester Yon, Mrs. Don Thompson, Lloyd Stoe, Sandy Olafson and Helen Streiff.

Mike Burggraf and Bruce Olson were co-captains of the Roseau hockey team this year.

Charles Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norrell Erickson of Roseau, was named student association president at the Northland Community College, Thief River Falls.

Scott Jacobson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jacobson of Roseau, was pictured with a large cabbage and beet he helped his grandad, Lester Block, grow on the farm.

75 years ago – Nov. 10, 1949

Robert Harris, son of Dr. and Mrs. R.V. Harris of Roseau, was chosen as captain this season of the University of Minnesota hockey team.

A new post officer building in Roseau was to be built this year.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sonsteng sold their home in the Hollywood Addition to Dan Risberg and moved to the Bjorkman farm north of the Richardson Bridge.

Miss Lillie Evelyn Grindahl of Roseau and Berton Strong Jr. of International Falls were joined in marriage at a ceremony performed at the bride’s parent’s home on November 5.

A funeral service for Mrs. Ole Erickson of Malung was held in the Malung Hall and burial took place in Malung cemetery. Mrs. Alice Hedlund and Mrs. John Hetteen sang two duets, one in English and the other in the Swedish language.

Among the students in the cast of the Roseau Junior Class Play, “The Headless Ghost” were: Philip Bergland, Donna Schwarz, Marlene Norman, Eugene Hill, Monroe Olson, James Oie, Ronald Zuberbier, Donna Kvien, Nancy Dahlquist and Anita Comstock.

Mrs. Julia Carlson is again the owner of the Wannaska “Eat Shop”.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bergstrom leased Hotel Evelyn to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eklund.
