50 years ago… Al Grahn runs 12 miles a day to stay in shape

En Liten Svensk Shoppe in Roseau was having a Scandinavian Holiday Open House on December 14.

Averie Stewart and family of Salol made 300 rounds of lefse. They were selling it on December 7 for the “Walk To Remember” Benefit.

Dayton Grafstrom of Salol celebrated his 88th birthday on November 29 with afternoon guests.

The Wannaska Lions Club was holding a pancake breakfast benefit for Lorna Skoien on December 8 at the Wannaska Community Center.

The Roseau Girls Hockey team defeated Wayzata 6-5 at the Rams Sports Center. Scoring Roseau goals were Kate Helgeson (2), Memphis Mertens and Kayla Santl (3).

Members of the Roseau PeeWee AA team that visited LifeCare Manor residents this week were Abram Hinson, Jake Halvorson, AJ Klint, Beck Hammer, Cade Ginther, Tucker Kvien, Chase Bachleitner, Eli Wensloff, Landon Baumgartner, Isaac Baumgartner and Liam Johnson. They were coached by Alex Halstensgard, Dan Halstensgard and Paul Baumgartner.

Representative Dan Fabian, who was elected to the Minnesota State House of Representatives in 2010, was chosen by his Republican colleagues to serve as the House Majority Whip.

Morgan Anderson, RHS junior and daughter of Ward and DeAnn Anderson of Roseau, was awarded first place in the Conference 4 Fall Trap League. Roseau 8th grader Taylor Johnson, son of Chad and Nickelle Johnson, was recently honored with first place honors in the Conference 1 Fall Skeet League.

The “Melodears” of Oak Crest Senior Housing held their annual Christmas Concert on December 1. They also performed their concert at LifeCare Manor on December 3. The members were Cliff Skime, Pearl Mitterling, Helen Thompson, Violet Sunsten, Beulah Maher, Ruth Erickson, Donys Nelson, Agnes Heppner, Myrtle Lee, Annie Rygh, Marion Carlson, Judith Gugleberg, Nellie Sealy, Louvic Mattson and Marlene Nelson (Director).

The Rams boys basketball team was 3-0 with a 81-33 victory over the LOW Bears. Leading scorers for the game were Ryan Jobman, 17 points; and Brandon Pfeiffer, 16.

The Rams Girls Hockey was 6-1-1; ranked sixth in the state in AA on November 29 Roseau defeated Warroad 4-1. Scoring for Roseau were Tianna Gunderson (2), Josee Lundgren and Lindsay Santl.

25 years ago – Dec. 4, 1999

The Wannaska Lion’s Club was heading a drive to oversee the acquisition of a motorized wheelchair for Sheltering Oaks. The wheelchair will be used by Raymond Palm first, then by others who need it.

Brian Trangsrud of Badger was the lucky winner of a Winchester Model 70 30-06 at Wally’s Grocery Store.

An open house 87th birthday for Ebba Ruth Grindahl was to be held on December 12 at Sheltering Oaks.

An open house 50th birthday party for Joyce Lisell was to be held on December 11 at the Roseau AmericInn Hotel.

The 1999-2000 Roseau Rams’ hockey cheerleaders were Junior Varsity: Jessica Voll, Sarah Boroos, Candace Wysocki and Katie Erickson; and Varsity: Sarah Swanson, Deanna Byfuglien, Kristi Olson, Amanda Mahne, Michele Wiskow, Kelsey Spicer and Joanna Lisell.

The Roseau Ram hockey team under new coach Aaron Broten, defeated Thief River Falls 7-1 in their opening game. Roseau goals were scored by Joe Adams, David Klema (2), Luke Erickson, Erik Fabian, Casey Thompson and Ryan Fevold. Jake Brandt was in goal for Roseau.

Members of the Ram boys varsity basketball team were Justin Oster, Adam Pavek, Nathan Olafson, Joel Robinson, Dan Adkins, Jeff Sjaaheim, Jeff Rudebusch, Jeff Swanson, Mitch Anderson, Paul Rudebusch and Mike Welch.

Malung Students of the Month for October and November were Kristin Comstock, Jessie Johnson, Hana Norberg, Max Kruger, Emily Nelson and Kirsten Didrikson.

40 years ago – Dec. 5, 1984

Sara Olson, daughter of Allen and Mary Olson of Roseau, was pictured sitting on Santa’s lap when Santa visited the Roseau County Museum on December 1.

Rick Vatnsdal and Don Hayes, owners of the Plumbing Barn in Roseau, announced the grand opening of the new business which was located north of the old location of OK Machine.

Randle’s Ben Franklin in Warroad was celebrating their grand opening. The store replaced the Variety Village Store that Randle purchased in October. Jeff Helquist was the store manager.

Tammy Brateng of rural Roseau was the winner of the microwave oven given away at the J.C. Penney’s store during the Preferred Customer Super Saturday Sale.

Bruce Helgeson, a freshman at Bethel College, was performing in the Festival of Christmas concerts as a bass in the Bethel Choir. He is the son of Roger and Ruth Ann Helgeson of Roseau.

Bernie Anderson of Hardware Hank Farm Center in Roseau, was awarded the “President’s Award” for being one of the Top Hank’s Paint Dealers in the Midwest.

Rick Millner of rural Roseau was the overall individual winner in Dairy Judging at the International Livestock Exposition held in Louisville, Kentucky.

Roseau football players named to the All Conference team were Mike Ross, Matt Moren, Rich Lang, Mark Wold and Sid Thompson.

50 years ago –Dec. 5, 1974

The new First Federal Savings and Loan building in Roseau had been completed.

Voters in Roseau were going to the polls on December 10 to vote on whether or not to permit the city of Roseau to grant on-sale liquor licenses.

Mrs. Ezra Davy was pictured holding an afghan she made in the form of an American flag. It was the 11th one she had made which takes her two weeks to complete.

Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hagen of Roseau announced the birth of a son, Todd Anthony Hagen, born on October 9.

Mr. and Mrs. Kean Beito of Roseau announced the brith of a daughter, Stephanie Rae Beito, born on November 20.

Robert F. Foley, Roseau, was appointed 1975 district No. 1 heart fund chairman for the Minnesota Heart Association.

Receiving life membership in the Roseau Post of the American Legion were Mylo Anderson, Don Hinsverk and Albert Olson.

The wedding of Barbara Thompson and Gus Jacobson was held on November 30 at the First Baptist Church in Roseau.

Al Grahn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Grahn and formerly from Roseau, at the age of 57 runs 12 miles a day to keep in shape and “loves it.” He is a Portland Community College electronics instructor and runs marathons.

75 years ago – Dec. 8, 1949

Louis Larson was the new mayor of Roseau.

Mr. and Mrs. O.S. Medhus were pleasantly surprised on the evening of November 19, when a large group of relatives, neighbors and friends gathered at their home to help them celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

E.E. Johnson sold his beer parlor business to John C. Johnson. The business was located between the Honl Bakery and the Locker Co-op Store.

Otis Norman and his men were busy moving school houses. They moved one from Spruce to the Raymond Anderson farm in Falun and he moved the Oak Grove school for a warming house at the new rink.

Miss Joyce Tobin and Oscar Aasen were married in a single ring ceremony on December 1 at the rectory at Badger.

Carl Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole O. Lee of Ross, was a member of the Concordia College, Moorhead, debating team.

Frank Jirmasek, who is farming in Falun, raises a great deal of clover and has found that 4,5 and 6-leaf clover leafs are common rather than the exception.

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Brandt and Dalton Lisell of Malung were leaving for Goodland, Florida to spend the winter.

Recently undergoing major operations were Mrs. M.B. Magnusson (at the Budd Hospital) and Richard Lundgren of Warroad (at the University Hospital in Minneapolis).
