Santa Maria, Calif.- Gary was born on August 11, 1943 to Harold Raymond Norquist and Gladys Johnson Norquist in the small town of Roseau.

He attended local schools in Roseau, and after finishing school, he joined the Army in 1961 and was stationed in Korea. He received training in Fort Leonard Wood in Boise, Missouri. While in Korea, he worked in aviation supply.
