San Jose, Calif. - Dennis L. Nelson was born on August 2, 1946 in Duluth to Emil and Marie Nelson. He attended elementary and high school in Roseau. His participation in high school sports included hockey, baseball, and golf. He would spend days at the local golf course caddying for some of the better golfers and learning what made them good. His passion for music led him to playing a trumpet. After high school, he was accepted as the youngest musician in the United States Army Field Band stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland.
