Whatever the hometown fans were thinking on Saturday evening at Roseau Memorial Arena, Jimmy Stordahl, an old hockey player, beamed as he watched the Rams take a 2-0 lead against the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks.

In the late 1950s, coach Oscar Almquist preached an old adage to Mr. Stordahl and his Ram teammates in the locker room before every home game.

"Catch them with their bus legs," Mr. Almquist said. "Maybe they're not as quick after they got off the bus from the long bus ride."
