She could see the crowd through the tiny window on the plane and a cluster of eager faces, holding posters, clutching balloons and waving American flags on a hot summer afternoon underneath a vibrant, blue sky. She craned her neck, hoping to get a sneak peak. "They're out there somewhere," she remembers thinking. She stands, smooths her uniform, and starts walking.
