On a lovely afternoon over Thanksgiving break, I had the wonderful privilege of interviewing my grandfather, Robert “Bob” Cummings, about his experiences in the US Army. In this essay I have pieced together a summary of his service from our conversation, quoting him throughout, and boiled down the message I perceived in it into six words: war is ugly, God is good.
