Sit a spell with Bernie Bohlinger over on Mattson Island northeast of Roseau, and he's never dull.

He insists there's nothing newsworthy about his life and that he is just an amateur whittler.

He's wrong on both accounts.

In late March, he was in his kitchen in the house he built.

He's a lifelong bachelor who grew up in a family of 10 kids when times were tough and tragedy was never far away.

His brother, Bob, seven years his senior, fought and died on Okinawa in 1945.
