Brian Mitchell King was born on March 28, 1974 in Baudette to Thomas King and Carol (Cota) King. He lived in Indus through fifth grade before moving to Warroad, where he graduated from Warroad High School in 1992. He then began his pursuit of his criminal justice degree, playing baseball while attending Northland Community and Technical College for two years and then graduating from Bemidji State University in 1996.
