Alvin "Buddy" Fugleberg was an 11-year-old farm boy in rural Roseau in the winter of 1945 when one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific was being fought on Iwo Jima - a name that is forever in the history books.
Buddy listened to the news on his family's battery-operated radio during the 36-day battle from February 19, 1945, to March 26, 1945.
For the Marines and Navy corpsmen, it was as close to being in hell fighting in that volcanic hellhole, where some of the fiercest and deadliest fighting of the war was fought.
