The Lake of the Woods Humane Society opened in Baudette in 2000. Stray and injured animals didn't have a home and it was needed. Although it was a tremendous task to raise the funds to build a shelter from the ground up, a handful of local pet lovers were determined to have a place for animals that needed help.

The shelter is a 501c3 registered non-profit organization that is completely volunteer operated with an all volunteer managing board of directors. It was started and exists completely on donations and the kindness of local pet lovers.
