A real hero and our unlikely political times

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

This past Monday, I thought of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., a hero and a remarkable man who preached brotherhood and equality.

He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at age 39.

It took great courage to preach racial equality almost anywhere in America when Negroes - as they were called even into the 1960s - weren't allowed to live in certain neighborhoods or even to vote.

I remember coming home from overseas in 1968 and later reading news accounts that returning black veterans were attacked and even lynched because of the color of their skin.

They had survived Vietnam, but they didn't surviv...
