A week ago Thursday evening, August 17, Roseau Mayor Dan Fabian was duly impressed. Initially, he remarked that he couldn't recall any committee from the Minnesota State Legislature coming this far north. "I take that back. It's been a long, long time since a committee from the legislature has come this far north as Roseau." He recalled that during the 2002 flood various legislators and the governor had traveled to Roseau. "I applaud the Senate Capital Investment Committee for coming to Roseau...
Unless you're drowning or afflicted with aquaphobia, you love water. That should be Minnesota's motto along with "The Land of 10,000 Lakes." Roseau County is one of the rare Minnesota counties. Our lakes can be counted on two fingers. Hayes Lake, which is man-made, was completed in 1973 after the construction of Hayes Dam. Additionally, Lake of the Woods is almost entirely within Lake of the Woods County. While the lake reaches the shores in Warroad and Springsteel, a mere two 40 acres are...
by Jeff Olsen Booking Eric Litwin, the creator of "Pete the Cat" for two performances at the Roseau School Theater next week, is as good as having a Halloween party with helium balloons to let loose up in the air. If you're an actual oldster, you won't know anything about Pete the Cat, a character as colorful as a brand new box of 64 crayons who gets into all sorts of amazing situations. Under the category of knowing what a smash hit is with...
Here are a few important facts to consider. Never argue with a woman who cooks your supper. She might spit on your pork chop. Never tell your kids that they're stupid. They surely inherited the deficient brain cells from you. And finally, always serve the best wine first, which I'd read in the Bible at least 70 years ago. That nun, whose name I have long forgotten, was big on the New Testament and so was I. Especially when it came to the miracles reported in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I was...
We started our adventure with Sarah and Brian. Our first stop was at Kyle's cousins on our route to Gardiner, Mont. Shawn and Pam were surprised to see us since Kyle didn't give them a heads up we were stopping. They were happily surprised and we had a great visit with them. We continued on and spent the night in Billings, Mont. My only thoughts about Billings are they definitely rape you with hotel prices! There weren't any hotels, that were somewhat decent, for under $250.00! I think that's a...
by Laurel Latham Darlene Smith has dreamed of skydiving for most of her life. She had planned to skydive when she was 75, but her plans fell through. This year she decided it was now or never. "I did some research and discovered there were businesses in Fargo and Duluth-Superior that offered skydiving," said Darlene. "I decided I'd rather have a view of Lake Superior than a view of cornfields when I jumped from a plane." Darlene, who resides at Warroad Senior Living Center, and her son Kevin...
