    Jeff Olsen|Apr 27, 2019

At the Roseau County Board meeting on Tuesday morning, the commissioners unanimously approved a multimillion dollar road construction project. "Knife River Materials out of Bemidji was the low bidder. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it was about $4.6 million for a seven-mile project," said Commissioner Jack Swanson. "It will go from Skime to just north of County Road 4," he said, adding that the construction would start sometime in June. "The intent is that it be completed during th...

It was a fine start as Erik pitched six innings, according to The News Tribune. Swanson worked 1-2-3 innings in the first, third, fourth and sixth, and never faced more than four batters in any frame. He...

  • At the Roseau DMV, she has the best ride in town

    Jeff Olsen|Apr 27, 2019

On Monday, Jodi Ziska, who knows more about people's vehicles, trailers and fishing vessels, rolled up and down the counter by just moving one or two fingers. She was seated in her Jazzy Air Elevating Seat Powerchair, which is pricey but worth every nickel. Jodi laughs often these days. "It cost a lot," she said, noting that the price was right, even if it was about $3,800. It wasn't a planned purchase. "I fell on December 13 and broke my right femur," she said, explaining that she has a steel...

  • WHAT ABOUT "WORRYWARTNESS?"

    Pastor Joe Elick|Apr 27, 2019

Are you a “worrywart?” A what? Alright, maybe you’ve never heard the term, but I thought it might catch your attention. As I’ve been sharing with the teens whose stories are now appearing in our progressively fine newspaper, when you write for a newspaper you’ve got to catch the reader’s attention right up front, or they may pass you up for the “Court Report!” Watch for teens’ stories each week under the title, “WRITE ON.” Worrywart. I first heard the term when I was a small child. I’ve had the tendency to be a worrier all my life, and when I...

  • Life's a great game if you're a winner

    Apr 27, 2019

Beautiful! On Saturday I was with royalty, who are the salt of the earth. Forget all the Rockefellers, Buffets, Zuckerbergs, Koch brothers and everyone else on Forbes List of Richest Americans. And forget all the mansions you see in Better Homes and Gardens. My wife and I were at Percy and Sandra Ericksons' house in rural Roseau, and it's their home sweet home. Here was Percy watching hockey on Saturday afternoon, and he is in a minority up here. He isn't a Republican. Nor is his wife, Sandra, who looks regal. She has such class, and this is...

Now if Kyle will get better so I have a partner for my projects! Speaking of Kyle, we will hopefully know more by next week. He is having two different MRI's and an EEG while this paper is being printed. Rain Gutters Back to DIY projects for this year. The first one I would like is this rain gutter planter. It...

  • There Is No Free Lunch

    Apr 27, 2019

To say that watching the news now days is an experience in the bizarre is an understatement. First the dems want sixteen-year-olds to vote. Then they want illegal aliens to vote, and now convicted felons, murderers, rapists, and child molesters to vote! Just as my generation was undeniable proof that eighteen is not old enough to handle alcohol responsibly the dem candidates are proof not to legalize pot. Come on Bernie! The Boston Marathon bomber should be allowed to vote!Burn another one, you still have enough brain cells left to talk, even...

  • Accountability, Replacement, and Community Survey

    Larry Guggisberg|Apr 27, 2019

Our teachers have been doing a great job working all year to keep our kids learning and advancing in the classroom. Roseau, as well as all public schools in the State of MN are in the midst of Spring Testing or Assessments in Math, Reading and Science called the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA’s). These assessments provide at least one accountability piece in public education by providing comparative d...

  • Be aware of bears this spring; DNR lists tips for avoiding conflicts

    Apr 27, 2019

Homeowners are reminded to be aware of bears this spring and check their property for food sources that could attract bears. “Bears are roaming around now with the loss of snow and warmer weather, so interactions with people have started in many areas of Minnesota,” said Eric Nelson, wildlife damage program supervisor for the Department of Natural Resources. As bears emerge from hibernation, their metabolism gradually ramps up and they will begin looking for food at a time when berries and green vegetation can be scarce. Remove attractants suc...

  • Breaking New Ground

    Apr 27, 2019

Agricultural producers are reminded to consult with FSA and NRCS before breaking out new ground for production purposes as doing so without prior authorization may put a producer’s federal farm program benefits in jeopardy. This is especially true for land that must meet Highly Erodible Land (HEL) and Wetland Conservation (WC) provisions. Producers with HEL determined soils are required to apply tillage, crop residue and rotational requirements as specified in their conservation plan. Producers should notify FSA as a first point of contact p...

Key changes include: • The Direct Operating Loan limit increased from $300,000 to $400,000, and the Guaranteed Operating Loan limit increased from $ 1.429 milli...

  • Roseau Youth Wrestling, Build a Foundation

    Coach Mack|Apr 27, 2019

I've heard the saying many times, and I seem to recall it going something like this: "A coach is only as good as their athletes". Well, as a coach myself, I'd have to agree strongly with that statement. No question, athletes can make a coach look great. But most importantly, I think that statement could be a lot more specific in recognizing all the important elements necessary to build a program. With my first two years as the Roseau youth wrestling coach in the books, I've come to recognize...
