Shayne Isane, Farm Bureau Director of Minnesota's District 7, and wife Denise of Badger, attended the 2018 AFBF Annual Convention & IDEAg Trade Show on Jan. 5-8, held this year in Nashville. "This was the first Farm Bureau Annual Convention I've been to," explained Shayne. "It's also the first AFBF Convention attended by a U.S. President in twenty-five years, when George Bush attended in 1993. President Trump spoke of how important it is to increase trade in order to support agriculture in our...

  • County looks to streamline prisoner medical costs

    Jeff Olsen|Jan 20, 2018

There is no "Get Out of Jail" free card, and it costs Roseau County whenever uninsured inmates require medical care. That's the word from several Roseau County officials, who were interviewed recently about a newly approved contract with LifeCare Medical Center to provide in-house medical care at the Roseau County Detention Center. "The County Board did approve the Jail Medical Service Contract," said Roseau County Commissioner Jack Swanson a week ago Tuesday following the board meeting. He...

  • Roseau Civic and Commerce Annual Meeting

    Jan 20, 2018

On Monday evening January 15 154 members of the business community gathered for the Roseau Civic and Commerce Annual Meeting. It was held at the Roseau City Center and was the most well attended meeting to date. The evening started with a social hour at 6 p.m. and the Roseau High School Jazz Band directed by Lance Dubay. The music they provided was played with perfection. There is no wonder as to why the Jazz Band will be heading to the Minnesota Music Educators Conference in Minneapolis in...

  • Sure, it's only a game!

    Jeff Olsen|Jan 20, 2018

Right away, late in the game with time running out and the Vikings doing absolutely nothing right and New Orleans having just kicked the apparent game-winning field goal with 29 seconds remaining, many of us thought quietly to ourselves, "Why me, Lord? What have I ever done to deserve this?" Forever, in these playoffs, the Minnesota Vikings have been like a cheating wife - a miserable, unfaithful shrew who flaunts all her faults. On Sunday evening, it all came back to any of us who have had our...

  • Respect for authority. What about our President?

    Pastor Joe|Jan 20, 2018

What I am about to write about has been forming in my mind for almost a year now along with the question: “Should I take this topic on?” I believe I should. I have a deep concern over the growing lack of respect in America on all levels of society. I’ve observed this with small children mouthing off to their parents and some parents letting them get away with it. I wonder if in some cases they are learning this at home. Dad and mom, how do you treat and speak to each other? Especially in front of the children. In the old Testament of the Bible...

  • Thank you Jim Jenson

    Jan 20, 2018

To the Editor, Thank you to Jim Jenson for submitting the article in regards to the “Organizing for Action” group and reminding me to sign up and become a member. Even though the article Mr. Jenson submitted was not completely accurate, I was impressed with how much of it stayed true to its original form. I tip my hat off to the marchers, protesters and disrupters of this world—who do so in a peaceful and respectful way. If it wasn’t for protesters and marchers, women would not have been given the right to vote in 1920, and if Mr. Jenson...

    Jeff Olsen|Jan 20, 2018

A week ago Friday evening in Menahga, the Rams were hoping for maybe one victory since they were competing in 10 of the 14 weight classes. One positive for the Rams, according to assistant coach Scott Mooney, is the work ethic of these 10 varsity Rams. "I thought we had a chance with Deer River," he said. He later noted that they had more than a chance against all three teams. "Our wrestlers really stepped up and performed well. In the last dual of the night, we had an injury so we gave them 30...

  • Rams hit milestone win against Warroad

    Jeff Olsen|Jan 20, 2018

A week ago Thursday evening at the Roseau Memorial Arena, the hockey Rams were cruising to their 100th win over the Warriors, their long-time rivals, when it got very interesting. For the first period and a half, the Rams made it look easy as they rolled up a 3-0 cushion. Everything went like clockwork. At the 1:23 mark of the first period, Aaron Huglen scored an unassisted goal and, then while on the power play, Aaron scored again at the 15:30 mark, with the assists going to Nathan Adrian and...

  • Freshman's two goals ignite Rams to 4-3 victory

    Jeff Olsen|Jan 20, 2018

On Tuesday evening at the East Grand Forks Civic Center, Paul "Kid" Huglen put on a signature performance as he scored the only two goals in the second period following a scoreless first period in which neither team showed much offense. The kid got the Rams rolling at the 11:01 mark when he ripped the puck past Carter Krier to shoot the Rams into a 1-0 lead. The assists went to Aaron Huglen and Josh Olson. At the 15:18 mark, the kid scored again, making it 2-0 with the assists going to Nathan...
