by Jeff Olsen This past Tuesday, it was the changing of the guard as District 3 Commissioner Levi Novacek was elected as the 2024 chairperson of the Roseau County Board. Additionally, the Roseau Times-Region was declared the official Roseau County Newspaper for 2024. A Week Ago Jack Swanson, the outgoing chairperson of the Roseau County Board, probably knows more than anybody else about the workings of the Roseau County Board of Commissioners going back to 1996 when he was the reporter for WILD...
by Laurel Latham Jayfen "Fin" Sikorski put a few miles on his 2006 Victory motorcycle in 2023. "I made four or five trips from Minnesota to Florida and two trips from coast to coast last year," said Fin. "My buddy Chip got me into being a traveling bike mechanic and my buddy Cody encouraged me to take road trips between jobs. I work at Sturgis and other big rallies as a mechanic, mainly doing service work, like oil changes and brakes or batteries. I did replace a belt on a Harley which took...
by Jeff Olsen What can top a great time, decked out in your favorite hero costumes, and doing nifty moves out on the dance floor? It sure beats wearing a tuxedo and stiff shoes. Beckie Erdmann, a member of the Roseau Women of Today, promises that these boys will have fun. This will be the 3rd annual Heroes and Heels Mother Son Dance. Their motto is quite catchy: Behind every SUPER hero is a Super Mom, Grandma, Aunt or friend! Grab your favorite HERO costume and come have a SUPER time dancing! It...
Mykenna Berg-Grengs Mrs. Olsen Veteran Narrative The person that I had chosen for this narrative would be my aunt, Melody. She has been in the military for over 20 years and has a family too as well. She grew up in a home with a lot of siblings and usually her dad. Her mom didn't live with her dad so she would go back and forth. She is one of the oldest of about 7 children. She has not lived with most of them though due to the difference in ages. She has 3 children and a loving husband in texas... Full story
Life is a steep climb, and it does the heart good to have somebody "call back" and cheerily beckon us on up the high hill. We are all climbers together, and we must help one another. This mountain climbing is serious business, but glorious. It takes strength and steady step to find the summits. The outlook widens with the altitude. If anyone among us has found anything worthwhile, we ought to "call back." If you have gone a little way ahead of me, call back- will cheer my heart and help my feet...
In a "come-apart-at-the-seams" world, the church needs to be about the business of helping people discover that there still exists the possibility of stability in life. Togetherness is an "Everybody Pursuit". One of my favorite Charlie Brown cartoon pictures Charlie Brown and Lucy in one of their frequent conflicts. Lucy says to Charlie Brown, as she holds out one hand with her fingers spread apart? "See these Charlie Brown? By themselves they are nothing." But she continues as she makes a...
They sat quietly. It was New Year's Eve. Once, they had ushered in the new year with great expectations and great relish. There was much to celebrate. Dress up and make an appearance at the familiar old dump where peanut shells would crunch under their feet and everyone raised whatever they were drinking in a toast. They were young then. Let the old coots stay home and be dull. It was time to party. Back then, everyone smoked. Mostly cigarettes - Lucky Strikes, Camels, Winstons, Salems, and...
"Looks like Jodie got new tires for Christmas" First, if you want to come after me at least spell my name correctly! A stalker and doesn't know how to spell a quite simple name. Maybe this ball-less wonder is talking about another Jodi?! I have stated in this column before...if you have an opinion or something to say to me, feel free to state your opinion. If you don't want it printed in the RTR, I have no problem with that either. I completely understand not everyone likes to be in the... Full story
According to the weather forecasters our love affair with El Nino will soon be over. Missing out on two months of cold and snow has worked out well for the ones that don’t snowcat, icefish, or run coyotes with hounds. Who pays the bill for rescuing the ones that get trapped on the lake by open water? Just wondering. It is nothing short of a miracle that more have not drowned. This old fisherman likes to fish, loves to catch fish, but they are not to die for. Now our very own great state of Minnesota has adopted the “Red Flag” law. Talk about op...
Sydney let her daughters open one present each from under the Christmas tree before dinner. I watched with curious interest while my six-year-old granddaughter wrote on her new drawing tablet that she’d just received for Christmas. She sat on her knees in the chair at the head of the dining room table. Her tongue stuck out the corner of her mouth as she focused intensely on writing her message. She used her right hand to push her long brown hair behind her ear, but her hair fell back into her f...

5 years ago – Jan. 5, 2019 Roseau County Commissioners Mark Foldesi and Glenda Phillipe retired from the Roseau County Board. DeAnn Anderson of Roseau had a lucky three winning streak. She attended a benefit and won three times in their drawings, she won three times at an event held at the Badger School and her name was drawn three times (out of five names drawn) in the Roseau Holiday Fantasy Promotion drawing. The Roseau Ram boys basketball team defeated Crookston 83-67. Leading scorers for t...
Submitted by: Gregg Iverson For the past few years, the Rams boys’ basketball team has been scheduling a Section matchup at home, with the Crookston Pirates, during the Christmas break. I can only imagine it’s a welcomed game, too. Not only for the players, but for the coaches as well. I mean, how many practices can you have during any school break before one starts to get complacent? Just after Boxing Day, (if you don’t know, look it up,) the Rams hosted the Pirates on the afternoon of Wednesday, 12/27. The Rams are sitting on a 4 game winni...
