by Jeff Olsen The Roseau City Council interviewed the top picks to succeed David Drown as the City of Roseau Public Works Director a week ago Thursday in the Council Chamber at the Roseau City Center. "We had close to a dozen applicants and we interviewed three of them," said Mayor Dan Fabian, adding that the interview process was open to the public. "We could have had a hundred people at the meeting." It wasn't well attended. "We interviewed three people - Mike Picard, who currently works for...
by Jeff Olsen Anytime two rival hockey communities earn Mr. Hockey honors in consecutive years, it says something about the caliber of hockey in Roseau County. Marty Mjelleli, the chairman of the Mr. Hockey Award and a member of the Minnesota All Sports Alliance, recently commented that it's an equally amazing accomplishment for two senior players on the same team to sweep the honors last March. "A year ago, Roseau senior Max Strand was the 2022 Mr. Hockey Minnesota winner," Mr. Mjelleli said... Full story
by Jeff Olsen Roseau High School Band Director Chris Barnes takes things in stride. If the drummer drops a 50-pound barbell on his big toe, he's understanding. "Wear steel-toed boots the next time," he might suggest. The show must go on! It wasn't a new gig playing at halftime during the UND football game between the Fighting Hawks and Indiana State University on Saturday, October 28, in Grand Forks. "We've gone there three or four times since I started in Roseau," he said, adding that UND is...
by Laurel Latham Creative minds have always traveled for inspiration, well-being and to support the creative process. Travel stimulates an exchange of ideas that improves the work of an artist. Glen Heppner's artwork clearly reflects years spent living in London and traveling throughout Europe. "My two favorite cities in the world are London and Warroad," stressed Glen Heppner. "I studied Art History for a semester at Oxford, England Centre for Medieval & Renaissance Studies, while earning an...
Poems by: Thoren Burroughs Roseau Community School Mrs. Olsen’s Sophomore English My Morning World: In the morning, getting up early, the sun did not even arise on the black night. Getting up off the floor boards, like sandpaper on wood, “swoosh swash.” with each step. Making my way to the kitchen starting at the stovetop, as I open the fridge, it makes a sound of glass and plastic going “clink, clank, clash!” I grabb the egg’s, I set them on the pan to hear butter and grease sizzle and pop. Then I take a kettle and boil some water; while waiti...
Someone once told me the following, "When he came, I didn't know how to act or what to do. I don't like surprises and usually plan far ahead. But, this time I didn't even have a day to plan. Why would he come anyway? That person did not like surprises. My house nowadays is pretty much in order, except with what I have stashed in places which even I can't remember. I have to deal with these places, a bit at a time to de-clutter what is inside. Enough of that, it will happen someday. Surprise...
One of the many neat things about grandmas is that they have great expressions and sayings to help everyone else sort out life. My grandma had a saying she would use every time I would understand something new. She would say: “Ah, And the blind man picked up his hammer and saw.” I loved her play on words. It made you want to invent new stuff you learned just to hear her say it. To be able to see, or understand something clearly however, is a wonderful thing. We may sigh and say, “Ignorance is bl...
Northern Minnesota is somewhat known for cold weather, but what is cold? Cold is nothing more than an opinion. For example, since moving to the north shore, the coldest day I've experienced was thirty-eight degrees below zero; admittedly, that is cold. However, my family members who live in Oklahoma and Texas tell me sixty degrees is cold – forty degrees is considered frigid. Pish posh. The upper-forties is still T-shirt weather if the sun is shining. Cold is just an opinion. It was 18 d...
Absolutely beautiful! Every day in this life, you meet deadbeats, dorks, and dummies. And then there's first class. Local pastor Jared Gustafson first met a legend in a church. "I met Mark because Chad Anderson, my hockey teammate and roommate at Bethel College, married his niece Annie" I said that Mark is a great character. "He's awesome. He's so much fun." Of course, Hult knew Jared was a hockey player. They both played the game. "This is the first trip we've gone on together," said Jared,...
Our first stop on our adventure was Bear Country U.S.A. We went there when we visited the Black Hills a few years ago. We knew it would be on our list this trip too. As you can see from the photos, you are up close and personal with the animals which is always amazing for me. I have an obsession for animals and never get to see enough of them! Bear Country has over 200 acres in the pines and meadows south of Rapid City. You have intimate views of a lot of North American mammals. You take a...
Halfway through deer season for those lucky enough to live in the nine day zone. Already stories of the big one that got away and even more of the ones that didn’t are going around. This old man’s fire for the hunt would barely make a pilot light. Time spent in the deer stand is still enjoyable but harvesting a deer is not really important anymore. With heated stands and food plots much of the challenge is gone. Holding out for a mature buck, meaning at least three and a half years old, brings the challenge back. There is a group of Tom Tur...
