Just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Principal Amy McGuire, who was still in her office, had her take on the first day of school. "It went really well, and it was awesome to see all of the parents and students just being really patient with us," she said, appreciative that the parents didn't enter the school. "They were great to give their kids a hug, send them in, and we were ready for them. Honestly, it went pretty great." Mrs. McGuire was also impressed with the youngsters wearing masks. "Once they...
Roseau School Superintendent Tom Jerome announced on Thursday that beginning Monday, junior and senior high school students will begin hybrid classes. Mr. Jerome noted that these students will attend classes in person for two days a week. This means that half of them will attend school on Monday and Wednesday while the other half will attend school on Tuesday and Thursday. Fridays will be distance learning days. For the time being, this hybrid model will remain in effect for at least a two-week...
Terry Leonard, the editor of the Stars and Stripes, the American military newspaper, never saw combat in Vietnam. In fact, he never ended up over there during his three-year Army enlistment as a Special Forces medic. Yet, he has possibly seen more hotspots than a California firefighter. It helps to have a world atlas to track all the countries he covered during his AP career as a foreign correspondent. From wars to revolutions to superpower summits, he's been on the ground covering them. From...

by Tristan Anderson, College English 12, Mrs. Didrikson I have been on this route many times, but this time is different; although, I do not know it at the time. On this particular weekend, my grandpa and I decide to fix one of the many old trucks sitting on my grandparents' property, the first of many since then. The Ford of choice is an old, brown 1990 F-150. At 14-years-old, I have never worked on vehicles much, so it is a learning experience, but one that I enjoy more than the school...
All these years later, I am remembering Mr. Wendell Hamerl, my late boss for a brief stretch at Builders Supply in Roseau in the early 1970s. He was a character and a damn hard worker. And a hero. I never knew it then, of course. It was years later that I learned of his exceptional and brave service to this country. He was born in Roseau in 1918, graduated from Roseau High School in 1936, and entered the Army Air Force in 1943 as an aerial engineer. From his obituary in February 2006 at age 88:...
Chapter 3 Pastor Joe grew up out in the country ten miles from Tacoma, Washington. There were five acres of “woods” (forest) and three acres of cleared land for their house, several out buildings, and a huge garden which was his dad’s hobby. There was also plenty of room for Pastor Joe to spend with his “friends.” One bright morning little Joe went out the back door to spend time with his friends. There was, Sylvester, the big, black farm cat who was always up for scritches. Smiling, little Joe stooped to offer scritches while looking u...
I was very fortunate to interview Dr. Thomas Borum, one of the most unique individuals I've had a chance to briefly get to know. Our interview was an hour and a half long. This sets the record for the length of an interview for me. He was one of the most intriguing people I have come across. Dr. Tom (This is the name I gave him. I told him Borum reminded me of the word boredom, he was far from boring. So, Dr. Tom it was!) had more professions at one time than most do in their whole life. He was...

This old chicken farmer just got done cleaning the chicken house. As usual when finished there were more questions than answer. Why do hogs, cows, horses and sheep have to be in a barn and chickens get to be in a house? This country has gotten to be so politically correct there are no longer any UND Fighting Sioux. In typical white man fashion, the Indian maiden has been taken off Land O’Lakes butter but we kept the land. Should the chicken sue for a barn? Or should the others sue for a house? After the first minute of breathing dust, the o...
I would like to thank all who attended the Roseau Watershed meeting about the Land Grab. With people on phones, zoom calls, and in person, we had approximately 40 people in attendance. We also had several letters that were written and read at the meeting. That was a great turnout despite the fact that many farmers were thrashing wheat. Every person that spoke at the meeting was in opposition to this project. All the Watershed board members were present. They heard their friends, neighbors and farmers who were in opposition to this project....
Page 35; “The Hay Creek Subwatershed, drains 116 square miles to the south and east of the city of Roseau. Agricultural land uses make up slightly more than 50% of the subwatershed, mostly row crop with a smaller proportion of pastureland. Approximately 40% of the subwatershed is covered by forest and wetlands, mostly in the headwaters of the subwatershed where 20 square miles lies within Beltrami Island State Forest….. Hay Creek is the primary watercourse, flowing 17 miles northwest towards its confluence with the Roseau River. “Nearly the e...
This letter is in regards to the editorial and column from two local spiritual leaders in the August 1st issue of the Times-Region. I have a problem with a spiritual leader who doesn’t understand that inherent in leadership comes the responsibility to heal and comfort. The televised funeral for George Floyd was a necessity in order to calm the many citizens around the globe that were in turmoil. George Floyd was not a perfect man, but he was treated inhumanely and the world reacted. I am sorry for the loss that Rod Eastman had in regards to h...
Question: I saw a bunch of stuff on the Minnesota State Patrol’s Facebook and twitter pages about the “Move Over” law and how it came to be after a Trooper was killed. Are motorists getting better at giving you room out there? Answer: You are correct, we did share information in regards to the “Move Over Law.” The law was created in honor of Corporal Ted Foss who was hit and killed on the side of the road while conducting a traffic stop on Aug. 31, 2000. I still remember that day vividly. On this 20th anniversary, we honored Corporal Foss with...

Now I want to make clear as I write this article that I am not intending to be the "voice" of this newspaper or my church although they may, at least in part, affirm what I am about to say. I think President Trump was right when he said at the Republican National Convention that this coming election is the most important election in the history of our Country. Think about this. On November 3rd we're not only electing a president, but we will either be supporting the on-going Greatness of America...

Visiting at Vertina’s for the weekend were Bryan Vertina from Plymouth Terry from Ramsey, Kay from Champlin, Noelle and baby Ray from Columbia Heights. George and Gayle Petrowski came ov...
