DeAnn Anderson, of Roseau, had a lucky three winning streak. Her husband is Ward, Chief of Police for the Roseau Police Department. She has two children Nick and Morgan. DeAnn attended two different events and registered in the Roseau Civic and Commerce Holiday Fantasy Promotion and won three times at each of them. She first attended a benefit and won three times in their drawings. Mandy Marquis gave DeAnn a heads up that her son, Steele, made some baked goods and would be selling them at the Ba...
For 20 years, District 5 Commissioner Mark Foldesi took his seat with the Roseau County Board and was impossible to miss due to his NFL size, frequent wit, occasional stubbornness, and an "aw shucks" attitude. He was like Li'l Abner in the Al Capp comic strips of years ago - always colorful and extremely quotable. A week ago Wednesday, he was honored at the Roseau County Board Room. "They gave me a cake and a plaque. I wanted a check but, no, that didn't come," he said with a chuckle. He didn't...
Beautiful. An important date slipped by on Monday, December 31, which is understandable since none of us was alive when this special date was first celebrated up here. On Monday, December 31, 1894, Roseau County was founded. Lost in all those 124 years was how they actually celebrated the event or how cold it was. My best guess is that it was 28 below zero, and most of the inhabitants had been wearing the same long underwear for several weeks. We can only speculate that any number of Swedes and...
I was surprised to see that Steve Hall, a Brainerd native, passed away. I first met Steve in 2000, shortly after purchasing the Times-Region. He and his wife owned some hunting land in Roseau County and there was a pending lawsuit. He was seeking the help of the paper to get his word out. We assisted him with his request and ever since we remained friends. He invited Stacy Dunham, who was a friend and employee, and myself to Nashville. We immediately went. It was a trip of a lifetime. We stayed...
My note; Since our newly elected County Attorney will not be sworn in until some time on January 8, 2019. The question I have, does the Roseau County Attorneys office have any authority until after the swearing in is official?….. I would say no according to the Minnesota Statutes 388.01- Election; Qualification: Term… Quote “There shall be elected in each County a County attorney who shall be licensed to practice law in this state, and whose term of office shall be four years and until a successor qualifies. Before entering upon duties the c...

The Roseau PeeWee AA team attended the 30th Annual Paul Bunyan PeeWee tournament Dec 28-30 2018. There were 16 teams entered in the tournament with the highlight being the PeeWee team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan. The Bemidji American Legion raised money to pay their way to the tournament. A special ceremony was held in honor of the Humboldt junior team that was involved in a tragic bus accident last April. In Roseau's pool was Minot, N.D., Brainerd, and Hastings. In the first game Roseau faced o...
The boys basketball team was scheduled for a home game on Thursday, December 27th, during the Christmas break, but 'Ol Man Winter had other plans! Things did settle down a bit, so the visitors from Crookston were able to make it the next day for a Friday afternoon game. This would be a key North half section game for the Rams, one that Coach Hayden would have high hopes of notching another “W” in the win column. Since this was an afternoon game and my Christmas break was over (sigh) I was not able to attend the game. However, I did have the...
