The Minnesota Association of County Officers (MACO) named Martha (Martie) Monsrud, Roseau County Auditor, Outstanding Member of the Year, at the Annual MACO Conference held February 13-16 at the Doubletree by Hilton in Bloomington. Members of MACO in all 87 Minnesota counties submit names and vote on the Outstanding Member Of The Year Award. "I had no idea I was receiving the award," said Martie. "My husband Bruce knew ahead of time and my staff knew ahead of time but they kept it quiet. The...
On Saturday at the Wannaska Lions 21st Annual Fishing Derby at Hayes Lake State Park, nobody complained if the fish weren't biting. It was just being out on the ice and enjoying a nice day with a high of 18 above. There wasn't a single mosquito. Sitting at a picnic table just north of the beach were Roseau's Ryan Sprabary and his son, Weston. "I'm originally from Dallas, Texas," he said. "My wife grew up in Wannaska, and we've lived up here now since '07," he said, holding a hotdog in his...
A week ago Tuesday at the Roseau County Board meeting, the Commissioners approved the hiring of two part-time deputies in addition to upgrading the status of Deputy Sheriff Devin Corneliusen, an temporary hire for the past couple of years. Corneliusen will now be classified as a regular part-time deputy sheriff. The Board approved the hiring of Orlando Peralta, who served as a Polk County deputy sheriff and is the co-owner of the Dairy Queen in Roseau, and Chancey Gust, who is presently a...
On Monday, Roseau's own Newell Broten was cutting firewood in snow up to his knees, and this is how it is with those who grew up poor during the Great Depression and World War II. They know hard work. Still, he is an anomaly. He turned 83 on Friday, February 23, and is having nothing to do with flying south for the winter and sitting on some beach listening to a bunch of old codgers complain about their bum knees and bad backs. He'd be bored stiff. If he isn't building something or chasing...
Perhaps most of you know by now that Julie and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, February 10th. 50 years, Yea! After church that Sunday Mary Hoffer, our pastor’s wife cruised by me on her way to the copy room, paused momentarily, looked me in the eye, and said, “50 years, that’s a long time to be with the same woman!” I replied, “Or visa versa.” If I’d had time to think I would have said something like, “Your turn’s coming!” Do I hear an, “Amen” from Pastor Steve? Of course. By now you may suspect that this article is go...
From the first day of practice on October 30th and on through the season, it seemed that the Rams girls’ hockey team was on a collision course with the Brainerd-Little Falls Warriors for a rematch of the 2016-17 section championship game. Rams fans won’t soon forget the thrilling 4 OT win over the Warriors culminated by an Ella Helgeson goal after nearly 100 minutes of hockey one year ago in Bemidji that sent Roseau back to the XCEL Energy Center. Last year, the Warriors earned the #1 seed heading into the playoffs and the Rams had the #2 see...
Have you ever noticed that when you’re ready to give up that's when whatever you've been working SO hard on seems to happen? Wanting to give up will actually help because as soon as you stop trying to force the outcome and simply allow things to happen, they do. As I sit here and write this, I am allowing the words to come. I create these WOWs from a place of love and science. Sometimes I let the fact that after I posted the video there aren't many views. Come to think of it, I USE to let that get me down and have thought SO many times about g...
On Saturday at the joint Section 8A/8AA Team Tournaments at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls, there were no upsets as the higher seeded teams won according to their respective seeds. In other words, the top two seeds in each section competed in the championship finals for the right to advance to the MSHSL State Tournament on March 1 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. For the Roseau Rams, who were seeded fifth and met the fourth-seeded Crookston Pirates on Saturday, the odds...
On Feb. 8th the Lady Rams hosted the Warroad Warriors in a 8AA section game. The Rams started the game with full head of steam as they used aggressive defense to spur a 57-10 halftime lead. I'm sure you've all heard the saying, “Save the best for last.” That holds true with the Super Saturday Showcase that was held at Northland College last Saturday, 2/17. The Eagles from East Grand Forks Sacred Heart and the Roseau Rams would play in the last game of the day, which had a start time of 8 p.m.. Unfortunately I was not in attendance of this game, but from looking at the stats, and hearing reports from others, this one was for the ages! The first half was played with many lead changes, with no one team having more than a 5 point lea...
