by Jeff Olsen On Monday morning, Roseau County Court Administrator Pam Shaw was taking everything in stride. Prior to COVID-19, Monday mornings were almost the social event of the season as they filed through the Court Administration Office prior to their day in court in front of District Judge Donna Dixon. All that has changed. "We are holding more electronic hearings and, if people don't have the technology to get on an electronic hearing, then they can appear here," said Shaw, adding that if...

by Evan Peppel, College English 12, Mrs. Didrikson It is a place like no other, a place where strangers become friends and friends become family. A bad day here is still much better than a good day at school, although it may not feel like it sometimes. Here, despite the frigid temperatures, the tempers can still flare. With plowed up snow banks that make all the trucks and trailers become confined, it seems that some cannot wait to get out. The crews spend many hours here waiting for their...
I have decided not to write a story but instead, talk about a journey. We do not have to go to Mayo as planned because Joe's PET Scan taken in Grand Forks, came back clear. Our Mayo doctors still stay on track with all our appointments. We are so thankful for the medical care we have received here in Roseau, also for the care we have received in Grand Forks and the Mayo Clinic. We heard that Mayo had a huge lay-off of employees because of COVID. In September we will still have to bring hand...
by Julie Elick Sadness, and strong feelings of nostalgia went through our minds as we finalized the arrangements with Nathaniel Roseen, who owns North Pine Services, to come and take them down. Our Birch trees, the ones in our front yard! Oh, my! Nate is an expert tree taker downer, and does it with a smile on his face. I thought about writing a poem called: Ode to our "trees", but its only "we", "Joe and mee" who like to "see" our Birches, in the "weeee" hours of the morning and evening. I...

I've always been a little uncomfortable when our presidents and politicians end their speeches with "America is the greatest country in the world!" Yes, we're pretty good, but we have our flaws. I wonder what the Canadians think about such bluster. As a young kid learning American history and reading the Declaration of Independence, I was most proud of one important single sentence by Thomas Jefferson: "All men are created equal." Beautiful! Later, he became our third president. It would be many...
It was finally time for a bonfire night and S'MORES! I may be a bit of a pyro. (Don't ask Kyle his opinion on that statement!) I really like the look of flames and then you add chocolate and it is a double win for me. The weather has been a bit on the cooler side lately with just a bit of rain. (Way too much rain in my opinion!) So we thought it was the perfect time to have a bonfire. The kids agreed it was a good idea too. It is quite amazing to have everyone in agreement at one time! Needless... Full story
