by Jeff Olsen Roseau County didn't embarrass itself on Primary Election Day this past Tuesday. At least 22 percent of the total 8,851 registered voters in the county voted either by mail-in ballot, absentee ballot, or in-person at one of the four polling stations. Initially, Roseau County Auditor Martie Monsrud had predicted around an 18-percent turnout, and so the county did her proud. They voted! In this highly Republican county, the results were a forgone conclusion, at least locally. U.S....
by Jeff Olsen On Monday afternoon, Beth Carlson, the Roseau City Clerk/Treasurer, sounded confident. She was upstairs in her office in the Roseau City Center and had all of her ducks in a row for what would transpire downstairs on Primary Day. "Mary Foley is the head judge. She actually runs the election part of it," she said, adding that the primaries are usually pretty slow. Still, Tuesday's Primary Election has to run like clockwork. "Mary assigns the positions so the more experienced ones...
by Jeff Olsen The August 11 deadline to file for mayor and two Roseau City Council positions in the November General Election will see two council members running unopposed. Jane Evans, with more than four years on the council, and Pat Novacek, who has served upwards of 16 years, will be sworn in January 2021. Mayor Jeff Pelowski did not file. After 11 terms and 22 years in office, he wants to cut back on his responsibilities. "He's done a great job," said Jane Evans this past Wednesday.. Yes, t... Full story
by Jeff Olsen Meet Saber M. Kirollos of Katy, Texas, an eloquent chap fighting a solo battle to get what he considers his fair compensation. In 2010, he purchased three parcels of property from Richard "Dick" Roberts for $55,000. Since then, he has paid more than $41,000 in property taxes. The City of Warroad wants 41 acres of his property, mainly in the water, to gain access to the marina located near Taylor Road in Warroad. Mr. Kirollos will go down fighting for his property, which is as...
by Katie Borowicz, College English 12, Mrs. Didrikson I live with two older sisters who are just as crazy as my two younger brothers. We all like to push each other's buttons til they can not be pushed anymore. It is a fight everyday from simply going to the bathroom or who gets to eat first. Being at home is loud and crazy, but nothing compared to when my sisters and I are on the basketball court. We all started playing basketball when we got to first grade and played up with older teams. Like...
We did it. We put in another sump pump! Now we have four, two in the basement, and one on each side of the house. It is the craziest thing. We put an egress window in last year. These windows are made so you can open them from the inside and crawl up into it and go outside. This makes it safe to sleep in the basement. It has a deep well (probably 3 feet into the ground). Anyway, one of the main reasons we did it was to keep water out of our basement. We had a bad window which leaked during...
Recently at our church we sang a song that included a repeated line that caught my attention and my reflection: "That name above all names..." It was a reference to Jesus as the song brings out. A couple of days ago I "Happened" to (or was it God?) run across a verse in the book of Philippians from which the line in the song must have been taken. Philippians 2:9: "Because of this, God raised him up to the heights of heaven and gave him a name that is above every other name..." Now this verse is...
The pandemic has not stopped the generous spirit of the people in Roseau County and surrounding areas. A few weeks ago, the ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) Walk/Run fundraiser took place. The track & field grounds in Roseau where the action culminates each year were silent. The fundraiser was quieter than usual as people participated individually or in small family groups at or near their home due to the social distancing recommendations. Yet, this year was a great success for the Dick Novacek's Hear...
Beautiful! The system is rigged. For the rich! A week ago Friday, I punctured my right palm on a rusty nail while I was tearing down a lean-to with my favorite grandson named Nolan, who was doing the bulk of the bull work. Immediately, the thought came to me of developing lockjaw and that is no good because I have mentioned to close friends that if I am dying to please put a big pinch of Copenhagen into my lower lip so I can die happy. But how the hell are they going to pry open my jaw? I haven'...
It's hard to believe Brandon has turned 22 years old! Considering I'm only 29 he is catching up fast!! Soon he will pass me in age. HaHaHa! It's great seeing your kid turn into an upstanding individual. You work so hard when they are young teaching them everything you know from manners to cleaning, cooking and everything in between. You want them to be a caring, loving and considerate individual with a great head on their shoulders. You don't want them to be taken advantage of and you want them...
In regards to the Roseau County farmers “Land Grab”. 1. A recent coalition parked two 50 foot trailers near Roseau to spread awareness of a needless Land grab NW of Roseau. 2. The MN Department of Natural Resources and the Roseau River Watershed District are trying to steal good fertile farmland and turn it into a mosquito infested marsh. 3. This land grab by the MN DNR and the Watershed District will cause more overland flooding in the spring and it plans to close up run off drains in the fall so the area will freeze up with approximately eig...
In answer to the Roseau County Board, asking for comments in the Roseau newspaper dated 08/01/20. I have a comment. In 2014 I appeared before the Roseau County Board; I presented this document: February 24, 2014 In Regards to County Employees County employee Brian Ketring is no different than any other employee of the County. He follows the Policy on direction of the County Board as any other employee. What gives Jim Jenson the right to constantly, relentlessly, maliciously attack and ridicule this man or any other County employee and their...
1: After 5 years of complaining to the county board with no resolve…. April of 2011 I filed a 23 page complaint along with many pictures of the incompetence of Co Eng. Brian Ketring with the “Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (the “Board”) is to regulate the professions and enforce the statutes and rules in order to Protect the Public.”….. In mid-summer I was told that someone had been inquiring about the HWY Dept. and talking to Brian Ketring…..At the November...
As a US Air Force retiree and lifelong resident of Senate District 1, excluding the time I was serving in the Air Force, I was very surprised to see Senator Mark Johnson's social media posts on July 25 describing his support for Mission 22 at the Goodridge Freedom Festival. Mission 22 provides support and services to veterans with the goal of helping to prevent veteran suicide. This organization provides a vital service to veterans, so I applaud Sen. Johnson’s support for their members. However, his social media posts came as a surprise, becaus...

by Donn Haugen It was a little warm this Wednesday during Men’s League. Do they call this the Dog Days of Summer? Either way it wasn’t Dog Days of golf. Out front the Men were tearing it up. We had 4 guys all shooting 36 Gross. Jared Strand, Kurt Weston, Sam Grafstrom, and Brian McMillan all came in with a great round out front. Low Net went to two of those fellas, Kurt Weston and Sam Grafstrom had a Net of 32. Report is there were a lot of good scores out front. Kurt Weston also had closest to the pin on hole#7 within eight feet. Don Ross too...
by Keith Cumming The Greenbush area once again escaped the rain that rolled through the area Friday night and early Saturday morning, but by mid morning, the sun was out and it turned into a beautiful night of racing. Ten cars would take the green for the Modified feature, and Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, would come from his inside second row starting spot to take the lead. Wahl was pushed early by Mark Esala of Thief River Falls. After two early cautions, Wahl found his groove and started to pull away from the rest of the field to go on and pick...
Representative Dan Fabian, R-Roseau, joined a bipartisan letter Friday urging the governor to allow the Line 3 Replacement project to move forward after multiple delays and bureaucratic roadblocks stalled the project. “This project is incredibly important to our area, and it is time to stop throwing up roadblocks to this common sense project,” said Fabian. “The PUC has voted to advance the Line 3 replacement project time and time again. It is time to listen to the experts and the people of Minnesota. This project will provide good jobs durin... Full story
