  • Over in Europe with the old paratrooper

    Jeff Olsen|Dec 29, 2018

In October, Val Bernat thought he had died and gone to heaven. It was that sweet of a deal for the old retired Army officer, who's not accustomed to being treated like royalty. "I flew to Switzerland to see my daughter, Janis, and her husband, Martijn Mulders, a Dutchman," he said with an appreciative chuckle. Usually, Mr. Bernat, a tall skinny chap, gets crowded into an airline seat where his knees tickle his Adam's apple. Not this time! "My daughter upgraded my ticket to business class. So,...

  • Singer Gabbie June Gets a Helping Hand

    Jeff Olsen|Dec 29, 2018

Meet Arlen Sandland, a 60-year-old pilot, who had an inspiration a decade ago and sat on it for most of that decade before penning Everybody Thinks They're Alright. It is a catchy tune that he wrote for Gabbie June, and it wasn't a chance occurrence. Gabbie, a Roseau High School junior, was a young girl when Arlen and Diane Sandland, old friends of her parents, Harvey and Monica Johnson, were based at the Roseau Municipal Airport before moving to Williston, North Dakota. Gabbie June frequently...

  • Putting a little style into Trump's game

    Jeff Olsen|Dec 29, 2018

Beautiful! Before I toss Davey Wilson's hat into the ring, I must add that I miss Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama. Yes, I know that most of the folks up here couldn't stand Mr. Obama, maybe because he was black or maybe because he wasn't white. But what a breath of fresh air and a real touch of class compared to the present occupant of the White House. And you had to appreciate Mr. Reagan because he was likeable, could speak coherently, and was a decent man. Don't blame Fake News for Trump's...

  • Always an adventure

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Dec 29, 2018

I have so much on my mind I'm not sure where to begin. Brandon had his MRI and everything was good. They are thinking tendonitis in his shoulder. He was cleared for light lifting and is extremely happy. Kyle didn't have quite as much luck. During Tuesday's doctors appointment he was referred to Grand Forks Urology for an appointment Thursday. Thursday is put the paper together day. The staff amazed me once again. They dug in and we got it done and sent Wednesday. This allowed me to be able to...

  • The Wall is a Good Investment

    Dec 29, 2018

To the Editor, In my ten to twenty second skimming of our Favorite dolts weekly column I couldn’t help but notice I had been given the honor of “Chump of the year.” According to my friend Daniel Webster a chump is a dull, stupid person. If I am dull and stupid like “the Donald” it is an honor. Thank you, thank you very much, The liberal left learned nothing from the sixty million plus “deplorables” in 2016. After a few years of watching their antics on television it is painfully obvious that they not only think but know they are better and smar...

  • Roseau Rams girls varsity basketball team win big in season opener and reach 6-1 before break

    Tracy Borowicz|Dec 29, 2018

The Rams girls basketball team were ready to start the season and came out running. On Nov. 27 the Rams started out the season at home against the Warroad Warriors. The Rams applied constant defensive pressure in the first half which allowed many easy baskets. The Rams took a 70-16 lead into halftime against the Warriors. The Rams slowed things down in the second half giving everyone playing time and scoring opportunities. The Rams were victorious 89-27 over the Warroad Warriors. Scoring for the Rams were Kacie Borowicz 24, Julia Braaten 20, Ka...

  • Brainerd knocks off Lady Rams in Section 8AA Hockey

    Steve Huglen|Dec 29, 2018

The last time these two rivals met on the ice was back in February when the Section 8AA championship trophy was at stake. Rams fans know that Brainerd would eventually win a heartbreaking three overtime game and advance to the state tournament while ending Roseau’s season just inches away from its goal of repeating as the Section 8AA champ. As the old saying goes, “turnabout is fair play” in that in the previous year it was the Rams that eliminated Brainerd in the section final in four overtimes. So there is some history here . . . . On Frida...

  • Rams win one of three at Menagha quad

    Jeff Olsen|Dec 29, 2018

On Friday evening at the wrestling quadrangular in Menagha, the Rams came within 40 seconds of dropping their first of three duals. After Deer River stormed to a 24-0 lead, Race Knochenmus, at 138, pinned Brady Long at the 3:37 mark. With the Rams forfeiting at 145 and trailing, 30 to 6, they came charging back on a forfeit victory for Chandler Mooney at 152. Down 30-12, the Rams went on a winning streak with Brutus Grindahl winning on a pin (1:03) at 160, Ben Olson winning on a forfeit at 170,...

  • RAM'S BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM GOES 1-1 IN SECTION GAMES

    Gregg Iverson|Dec 29, 2018

The last two games the Ram's played were against section opponents and both were played on the road. The first game on Thursday, 12/13, was just to the east 20 miles against the long time rivals, the Warroad Warriors. The last few meetings against the Warriors haven't exactly gone the way Coach Hayden would have wanted them to go, even though on paper, the Ram's had the better record and in playoff's had the higher seed and a home draw. But that was then, and this is now. The first half, well, let's just say, had a little lack of flow and...
