by Jeff Olsen Robert Foley, the CEO and Chairman of the Board who will be 65 later this year, sounded delighted last Friday and wanted it known that Stuart McFarlane is ready to take the reins as bank president. "Stu has been here for a long time, knows what he's doing, and it's time to turn it over to the people who are younger, faster, and smarter." It's not only the changing of the guard. It's the changing of floor levels. "I'll move upstairs. I'm going to get off the lending platform pretty...

by Jeff Olsen Even before the turn of the century, 2002 Roseau High School graduate Sarah Butler made golf look a lot easier than it really is. The longer one plays the game, one thing is obvious - golf can be a most frustrating game. Especially when there's big money on the line! Reached in Florida last Saturday, Sarah described it as an unusual week. Golf today? "No, I watched football," she laughed, adding that on Monday she will fly back to Minneapolis where she lives . She has an...
I was surprised the kite flying festival on the beach wasn't canceled due to high winds coming across the Gulf of Mexico. Of course, I know it takes wind to fly a kite, but these were very strong. There are two things I don't like about going to the beach: getting sand inside my sandals and sand blowing in my eyes. So we opted not to attend. Even though we didn't go to the beach, we still saw the kites flying. Kites of every imaginable shape in various colors flew high above the building tops. W...
There are 75 years of memories, both of good times and bad which still reside in the back of my mind. Places, situations, tears and laughter. I used to stand in the middle of the floor in a coffee shop inhaling the amazing aroma of freshly ground coffee. Now that is a good memory!! I love my computer. I can file things even putting my files in other files and stack them in my "desktop" for quick access. A computer has the capacity to delete not only folders and files, but also can erase the...

Beautiful! It all came back to me, thanks to a recent article in the publication, Minnesota Reformer, about a bill being proposed in the Minnesota State Legislature. The headline read: Lawmakers propose free menstrual products in Minnesota schools for grades 4-12 The chief author of the proposed bill is Rep. Sandra Feist, DFL-New Brighton, who explained that providing free menstrual products would reduce absenteeism as some students without products miss school when they are having their...
I can't tell you how many times we have heard in the past months, "we didn't get our paper." I don't think any of us at the office could even give you a number to how many times it has been. There was a time when the Post Office was telling their customers to call us, like it was our fault. Ummm...excuse me! We bring the newspaper to the Post Office every Friday and once it's in their hands it's up to them to get it delivered. Right!?! That hasn't been the case and we have been getting more and... This old farmer is in no way, shape or form putting anyone down for having a love of ice fishing. But, are the what was once dozens, hundreds and now thousands of wheelhouses crippling what is probably our states best walleye fishery? When you can be out on the lake fishing and still have most of the comforts of home, why not? Maybe the only thing better than fresh walleye just might be fresh walleye out on the ice. It has been said that ninety percent of the fish are in ten percent of the lake. As of now roads are plowed to all of the ten perc...
Taking this column back to real life tween parenting. There is nothing worse than having a child that you feel you cannot console. The tears do not stop. You see the disappointment in themselves pouring down their face. You only wish you could let them see themselves through your eyes. The way you really see them. Not the great expectations they feel you have from them. Knowing you may have played a part in the tears that make them not hear you are proud of their failures as much as you are thei...
Have you ever talked to a chicken? Talking to the chickens is one of my favorite things to do at the fair. Do we communicate? Absolutely. Speaking about the mouth, the Bible has a lot to say about the mouth; especially the language part; "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks," said Jesus in Luke 6:45. God speaks. And what He has to say is worth paying attention to. Jesus said of his words, (which were God's words through his Son); "...the very words I have spoken to you are spirit...
