by Jeff Olsen Anna (née Carstens) Mensing, a 2001 Roseau High School graduate, will smile after a two-foot snowstorm, a half-mile long Boston traffic jam, or even a flock of seagulls excreting on her car. In other words, the 2007 graduate of Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, with a bachelor's degree in Nursing, is a gal for all seasons. Straight out of college, the young RN hit the big time. "My first nursing job was in D.C. where I worked at GW Hospital," she said this past...
by Jeff Olsen What a memorable date: 2/2/22! Just mere hours after giving birth to Roseau County's only baby born at LifeCare Medical Center on Groundhog Day 2022, Taylor (née Shaw) Hamilton, a 2012 Roseau High School graduate, delightfully talked about her newborn daughter, Emersyn Jo. "We went back and forth for a little bit on how to spell it. We decided 'y' was a little more feminine." Taylor is not rookie at motherhood. "We have a son, he's two and a half, and his name is Hayes Wilder...

by Laurel Latham Randy Turner, a handsome guy from Roosevelt and Dianne Mason, a dark-haired beauty from Williams, began dating in tenth grade, after Randy gave Dianne a ride home from a basketball game. As they tell their daughters, the rest is history. Neither Randy or Dianne remember who won that basketball game, but sixty-two years later, they remember that night like it was yesterday. "Randy and friends, Jake Jenzen and Lavern Norton were the hot guys from Roosevelt who started high school...
Written by: Kyla Novak Mrs. Didrikson, Advanced English 11 Right from the moment I picked up a book, I was hooked on reading. It clicked so easily in my brain that I never had to think about what I was reading –– aside from the more complex vocabulary words here and there. I remember in first grade, I got in trouble for reading along in the book we were reading without the popsicle stick we were supposed to use to follow along. I got so frustrated on the inside, since I was reading along, I jus...
When a person gets married or a new job, they usually have great expectations. It can be both challenging and exciting. Expectations go from idealism into reality, often sending us into disillusionment. We, can become defensive and frustrated. It is very difficult to look inward. Instead we evaluate the outward. We without realizing it, create our own problems, or fuel a fire which has been already lit. A good question to ask is "What am I like to live with? What am I like to work with?" When we...
Sunday, Feb. 6th, was Open Mic at Four Seasons Center and we had some very good music performed by some local and some out-of-town performers. The first one was a gal from Roosevelt who sang a cappella some old-time songs that her mother had sung years ago. She did a very good job and brought back some good memories. Then we had a group of musicians that played and sang for us and also included the audience in some singing also. We had ten performers and they all did a great job. This is open...
We're finally having a winter we deserve - cold, snow, and some good old-fashioned bitching. Up in Ottawa, which is in Ontario, Canada, truckers have been blocking streets around the Canadian national capital with their Freedom Convoy, and my general rule is never to mess with a slew of angry truckers who are upset about the Canadian national mandate to be vaccinated or they can't drive back and forth across the international border. I know some local truckers. They haven't taken even the first...
This time last year we were at South Padre Island and they had record cold temperatures. We didn't have water at our rental and lots of people didn't have electricity. It sounds like they are expecting the cold again this year. The February freeze last year left more than 12,000 cold-stunned sea turtles in the state of Texas while we were there. They are more prepared this year with the deployment of hundreds of people to the rescue in case of a severe amount of cold-stunned turtles, again....
If the January 15th editorial from Wendy Butler was an example of showing “the world a little more Jesus”, I’m going to say that Jesus needs a better public relations firm. From what I remember, Jesus was about easing people’s suffering, not adding to it. I doubt that Jesus would chastise grieving family members whose only mission was to plead with community members to get a Covid vaccine in order to prevent another family from going through an unnecessary loss like the one they had suffered. I doubt Jesus would question the love they have fo...
This old farmer got his Times-Region today and when reading my letter to the editor found not one but two misprints. The one that was supposed to say “If you don’t have to show an I.D. to vote you shouldn’t have to, to buy a hunting or fishing license” said that you shouldn’t have to buy a hunting or fishing license. Thanks a lot. This old man doesn’t need any help getting in grief with our beloved D.N.R.! You missed a to. The second was “even a small percentage of illegal invaders coming into this country being criminals would be more than... Full story
Ephesians 4: 17,5:2 This week we're going to look at the Character of the Christian. To say that Christians are to have character is not to say that Christians are characters but if you're going to be: weird, at least be weird for Jesus. Romans 12: 1-2 "therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by...
