  • Girls Rule Roseau School Spelling bee

    Jeff Olsen|Feb 3, 2018

It's a long route to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 30-31. A week ago Monday evening at the Roseau Community School Theater, the very best spellers in grades fifth through eighth vied for the top two spots to advance to the Northwest Regional Spelling Bee on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls. It's not likely that the two local spellers advancing to Thief River Falls will have to spell scherenschnitte, one of the two winning...

  • Choose From over 2,000 Fabulous Dresses at Fashion Paradise

    Laurel Latham|Feb 3, 2018

Sisters Samantha Lindgren and Bobbi-Jo Rose make a great team. "I enjoy the fashion side of the business and Bobbi is great at bookkeeping and marketing," explained Samantha. "I've had friends tell me I should be a wedding/event planner, and I've dreamed of opening a dress shop for many years. Then last fall, my daughter and I were at St. Germaine's Creations in Argyle, shopping for a homecoming dress and the owner mentioned she wanted to sell her store. Bobbi-Jo and I decided to buy her store...

  • Pine to Prairie Drug Task Force Makes Arrests

    Warren Strandell Polk County Commissioner|Feb 3, 2018

Despite the strong effort that is being waged to control it, the drug problem in northwestern Minnesota is getting bigger and bigger all the time. Pine to Prairie Drug Task Force agents were involved in 339 arrests for drug trafficking and other violent offenses in the eight-county area of northwestern Minnesota in the past year. That number - 339, or almost one a day - was 68 more than the 271 arrests made in 2016 and almost 200 more than were made in 2015. In the process of their...

  • LifeCare Medical Center Re-Designated as Level 4 Trauma Hospital

    Feb 3, 2018

The Minnesota Department of Health recently re-designated LifeCare Medical Center as a Level 4 trauma hospital. Originally designated in 2010, LifeCare Medical Center and staff have voluntarily participated in an intense designation process to continue as part of Minnesota’s statewide trauma system. The process includes an outside review of the hospital’s resources and capabilities to care for trauma patients. LifeCare has met standards of commitment, clinical and equipment resources and staff training. The hospital also participates in a con...

  • Flying higher than a mountain peak

    Jeff Olsen|Feb 3, 2018

Beautiful! That's all I needed with my two-dollar bet riding against the New England Patriots. My pal, Oliver Ullman, is now holding the winning hand after a deejay has Tom Brady all fired up to play an inspired game this Sunday. Alex Reimer, 25, a host on Boston's WEEI was interviewing Mr. Brady last Sunday when he referred to Brady's five-year-old daughter, Vivian, as "an annoying little puissant." It is a catchy phrase. However, he should have been dope-slapped considering that Mr. Brady,...

  • Have you ever lost a pet?

    Pastor Joe|Feb 3, 2018

I read with increasing sadness in last week’s Roseau Times-Region (1/27/18) the article (courtesy of the Kenora Daily Minor News) about the killing of several dogs, family pets, belonging to “Northwest Angle 33 First Nation” residents. I feel for these families. Some of you know that my wife and I are animal lovers. Currently we have 2 cats, Bailey and Bumpkin who get upset if I don’t serve them their “daily lunch” (a treat) by 11:30 each morning... A few minutes earlier if Bailey can pester me into it! I cry every time we lose a pet. I thin...

  • Political Views

    Feb 3, 2018

To the Editor, Warren Buffet is a self made billionaire for a very good reason. In an interview with CNBC he said “I could end the deficit in five minutes.” You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a like wise all sitting members of congress are ineligible for re-election. The twenty sixth amendment granting the right to vote for eighteen year olds? took only three months and eight days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971-before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Const...

    Feb 3, 2018

Roseau - Teresa May Raskie was born July 16, 1964 in Minneapolis. She lived most of her adult life in Roseau, at REM and at PCS-Crestwood home. Teresa was a beautiful woman with a colorful soul! She was caring and kind to her housemates, always wanting to know if they were okay. She could be feisty as well as shy. She enjoyed rides to WORK (Focus) and going on outings in the van, loved the color yellow and having potatoes at any meal. She enjoyed talking to people and being talked to. She could often be seen rocking out in her wheelchair to...

  • Lyla Elaine Johnson, 88

    Feb 3, 2018

International Falls - Lyla passed away on January 26, 2018 at the age of 88. Our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, has destroyed death and bought life and light through the Gospel. We are deeply thankful for what God has done through His servant, Lyla E. Johnson. Lyla Elaine Johnson was given earthly life by her creator and was born on September 7, 1929, the child of Edith and Oscar Larson. On February 20, 1952, she and Byron received the gift of Holy Baptism, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in International Falls, and became children of God. On June...

  • Workout of the Week - WOW #60

    Jed Kobernusz|Feb 3, 2018

When talking about weight loss it's about going the distance not going for speed. There are many factors that play into one's weight loss and with every ounce of my BEing three stick out the most. Also, the song The Distance by the group Cake REALLY came to mind after creating the video for this week's WOW. Three Factors That Play Into One's Weight Loss A.K.A. The Guide To the Mythical Place of Health Called: Maintenance Being happy with what you look like takes a ton of work. The stages of change have been drilled into my head since college...

  • Wrestlers edge the Fertile Falcons, 33-29

    Jeff Olsen|Feb 3, 2018

A week ago Thursday in Fertile, the Rams squeaked by the Fertile-Beltrami Falcons in a contest which really came down to two important matches. At 138, senior Owen Gross went the distance in winning on a 12-5 decision over Damian Gudvangen. That 3-point decision could have been flipped around and, had his opponent won by a pin, even a lucky pin, the Rams would have lost. So, Owen wrestled a smart match and got the job done for the Rams. Another big performance was at 160 where junior Dale...

  • Pirates edge Ram wrestlers, 42-39

    Jeff Olsen|Feb 3, 2018

Forget the saying, "Close but no cigar!" At the high school level, any athlete spotted chomping on a cigar would be declared ineligible. Actually, it was the coin toss prior to the match that sealed the Rams' fate. "It was a chess match to get the right match-up to try to win the dual," said assistant coach Scott Mooney. "We lost the toss and that put us in a real bind." Also putting the Rams in a bind was forfeiting the first three weights to trail, 18-0. Then, it got interesting as Connor...

  • Rams Girls Hockey Record is 20-4 With Three More Wins

    Steve Huglen|Feb 3, 2018

The Rams girl’s hockey team defeated Sartell-Sauk Rapids 2-1 and St. Cloud 5-4 at home last weekend to complete Section 8AA play with a 10-0 record. The Rams will be seeded #1 and play at the Rams Center when the playoffs begin on February 10th. Roseau also avenged an earlier season loss to Thief River Falls with a 3-0 shutout win on Tuesday at the Ram Center. ROSEAU 2 SARTELL-SAUK RAPIDS 1 (Friday, January 26th at the Rams Center) The Rams outshot the Storm n’ Sabres by a 42-8 margin and picked up an important 2-1 win on home ice against lon...

  • Roseau Rams Hockey Association Coaches Update

    Kurt Weston|Feb 3, 2018

The month of January has been a true test for the Rams, as they have had to overcome adversity, come from behind, and also finish off an opponent in a close game. We started out the month on our swing south to play Brainerd and Rogers that was recapped in the last coaches update. After the southern swing we welcomed our Warrior friends over to Memorial Arena on Jan11th as both teams wore special ‘third’ jerseys. Warroad went with a gold trimmed in black and white and the Rams went with a throw back of the late 70’s. It started as a one sided...

    Jim Mack|Feb 3, 2018

Some of our Roseau youth wrestlers were back in action again this past weekend as they traveled to either Blackduck or to Warren to compete in their tournaments. In all, Roseau had 26 wrestlers competing in grades PreK through 6th grade at the two tournaments. Our wrestlers had fun with their teammates and they competed hard to represent our program and community with pride. Ram wrestlers finishing the day with an undefeated record and a title spot at the top of the podium were Brevyn Srnsky-Wagner, Weston Sprabary, Wyatt Peterson, Ben...

  • NORTHERN FREEZE BLOWS INTO ROSEAU, RAMS TAME THE PONIES

    Gregg Iverson|Feb 3, 2018

It was a big double header night last Friday, 1/26, at good 'ol RHS where the boys and girls basketball team would play host to the Northern Freeze. This sports co-op combines the two schools of Tri- County (Karlstad area) and Marshall County Central (Newfolden area.) The very first game of the season, the boys team played the Freeze in Karlstad and came away with a 12 point win. Coach Hayden was hoping to put another W in the win column this evening on their home floor. Things started off well for the Rams as they scored first and upped the...
