by Jeff Olsen Never has a Roseau High School graduation ceremony been held in the school parking lot. Thus, the Class of 2020 will forever hold the bragging rights as the first ever. What's more, they won't even be able to toss their caps airborne in unison, always a senior highlight. Welcome to the new normal! Roseau High School Principal Ivan Hirst is looking ahead to the big day. "We're all ready to go," he said last week, adding that Roseau is a big tradition town. In a break with...
by Jeff Olsen It was a different Memorial Day morning as the sun began to break through the clouds and one could hear the birds singing. That was different. Missing in action due to COVID-19 was the Roseau High School Band marching to the RHS gym and back to the Roseau Veterans Memorial on Monday morning. No one complained in these changing times. It just made it more special to remember those who died in action in the last century to the present. The old troopers, a good many needing haircuts,...
by Jeff Olsen During Tuesday's Roseau County Board virtual meeting, the commissioners approved the COVID-19 Preparedness Plan detailing what must be done on a daily basis at the Roseau County Courthouse. It requires that all county employees must self-screen using the Minnesota Department of Health's screening checklist prior to entering the facility. This info will be posted at all entrances. •A key component is the hand washing requirement that is mandated for all visitors. •They must eit...
by Jeff Olsen Even before the virtual city council meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Jeff Pelowski weighed the pros and cons of opening the Roseau City Center. "If there's a functional use for it, yeah. But if there's only a handful of people that potentially take advantage of it, you've got to do all the deep cleaning," he said, noting that it will be difficult to meet the six-foot social distancing requirement without restricting the public. Afterwards, he pronounced it a productive meeting. "We're...
by Gabriella Heinen, English 7, Mrs. Didrikson Me, my mom, my sister, Jen, (my horse trainer), and Tess (Jens daughter) planned to go on a trail ride. It was a bit of a chilly summer afternoon, my mom and I, and my sister got ourselves ready and then headed out to the horse barn to get our two horses (Maggie and Sadie), plus our tack. We then went to Jen's house to start tacking up the horses. My sister and I, plus Tess rode around the yard for a little bit while we waited for my mom and Jen to... Full story
Well, actually I had two dreams last night. In the first dream I lost my shoes. I hate dreams like that. Going around in my stocking feet gets old really fast especially when I have to go outside! Sigh! Then the second dream came along. I was scheduled to be in a boxing match with a big bald-headed man with hair sticking out on both sides of his head. He was tall, really mean looking and probably weighed 300 lbs. I was really worried. I didn't have the ability to move really fast and miss all... Full story

As legendary filmmaker George Lucas once wrote, "May the force be with you." You may wonder if that will have anything to do with my speech. Plot twist, it doesn't. I just wanted more attention than I already have. Hello there. My name is Skyllar Schoening and I have a problem. I like to talk and talk and talk. In fact, I talk so much that I've received an award not too long ago that basically implies I can't shut up. However, the beauty of it all is that I have created words on a paper. Wow!...
That's why I have been invited to share a few timely tips on what not to do as you begin the big stumble into adulthood. Boy, did I ever stumble. Last Friday, I stumbled upon a caravan of vehicles slowly advancing towards a group of teachers with balloons and big smiles standing on the east side of Roseau Community School. It was the Roseau Elementary School kindergarten graduation, and these kids were treated royally. What really moved me was they will be the RHS Class of 2032. I would be 88...
One of my favorite spring/summer/fall things to do is to have a bonfire. On a nice cool evening, a cozy fire and S'MORES!! I am a bit of a pyro so it's no surprise I like a bonfire and the same goes for S'mores since I like sweet treats. I came across a S'mores gourmet menu and now I definitely need to have a bonfire soon. I am having a bit of a hard time deciding which to try first. I think a sampler platter of each sounds quite amazing. A gourmet S'mores smorgasbord sounds like a great plan... Full story
Obama’s dream when he first ran for president was to “Transform America.” His idea of a transformation was to turn the greatest nation in the world into a communist third world country. He managed in eight years to double the national debt ran up by some and not all of the forty-three presidents before him. Hitler didn’t kill millions without a lot of help. It is totally disgusting what people will do when they feel no responsibility for their actions because someone in a position of power told them to. A prime example is that the people that h... First of all, I mean no disrespect to anyone who disagrees We can see things differently and still get along... I have love for all friends and family no matter what your viewpoint is.. I happen to agree with this. For those who ridiculously claim that we who want our jobs and lives back don't care about others, this is for you. In light of all the videos that are considered conspiracy theories and are leaving people to wonder what the truth really is, there's this. I can't say 100% what the truth is. I know I'm finding it hard to believe anyth...

Lancaster- Jack Frank Przekwas was born on March 20, 2020 to his parents Mark and Megan Przekwas. They were so proud and excited to add a little boy to the mix. From the beginning, Jack was such a good sleeper and rocked at nursing. His long toes and fingers portrayed the big boy he was one day going to be. Jack loved going camping at Grandpa's gravel pit, going for car rides, being snuggled, kissed and loved on by his big sisters, Belle and Lucy. The mornings were always our favorite time of...
Submitted by Steve Huglen As with most everything else, the Rams Varsity/JV banquet which was set for March 23rd was postponed as a result of COVID-19. The Rams were looking forward to officially sending off five great seniors and celebrate the team and individual accomplishments of a season that culminated in a state AA consolation championship. The Rams finished the season with a 23-6-2 record including a 13-1 run over the last 14 games. The only loss came in the state quarterfinal game to Min...
That was her question to me: "What's the point?" A bright young lady, a student at Roseau High School at the time she raised the issue. Maybe you're asking this question, perhaps using other words, in relationship to some of the extended, "have toos" surrounding the COVID-19 virus. "What's the point?" "I hardly ever finish anything I start," she continued. "But what's the point, we're all gonna be dead someday anyway!" I appreciated her boldness to let what was in her head come out of her... Submitted by Pastor Dave Peterson The following is the text from my speech for the Badger Memorial Day Celebration. We were unable to give this speech live due to COVID-19 restrictions on gathering. Memorial Day is the day we set aside to stop and remember, if but for a moment, the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great country. I want to say thank you for asking me to be a part of this solemn c...
