by Jeff Olsen On a recent weekday evening, Russ Sorenson, a chap with stamina and surely a stubborn streak, had just finished another of his six and a half mile weekday runs. He runs farther on the weekends. Some people, including his friends, call him "Crazy Russ." It fits. But he's not crazy, is fully coherent, and runs in the worst weather conditions. "I can't run inside because the school is closed," said the Polaris factory worker of 33 years. In another month, he will be 62 and should be...
by Jeff Olsen Booker Delmore, a happy octogenarian who was a gifted athlete, occasional brawler, and maybe even a model altar boy, was holding court this past Saturday from his home in Coon Rapids. He is 83 and in fine spirits. His dad was the notable Dr. John Leo "Jack" Delmore Jr., the only doc to see in Roseau in the good old days. Dr. Jack was legendary for answering his patient's deepest concerns. One included a snus chewer who was worried if Copenhagen was harmful. "I wouldn't trust you wi...
by Jeff Olsen Adalynn "Addy" Sorenson, 12, comes at life with a smile, an innocence, and pretty hazel eyes. She has beaten the odds as a spina bifida baby who might never have walked had it not been for medical intervention shortly after she was born. On Sunday afternoon, Krystle (née Barrett) Sorenson, a 2008 Roseau High School graduate, had just finished her shift at Greenbush LifeCare Manor. Nothing is left out in her account of the miracle baby. "I went in for my five month ultrasound, and...
by Mya Ballard, English 11, Mrs. Didrikson My freckles are my favorite feature. They have been through many things. They are very vibrant in the summer when I am tan. They become more sparing in the winter when I am not outside as much. These freckles have spent many days in the sun on Lake of the Woods and Rainy River. They have had water splashed on them constantly while tubing or skiing. My freckles are a part of who I am. They help define my face. My freckles have seen many things in my...
I walked to school most days when I was young. Washburn Elementary (9 blocks), Woodland Junior High (1.8+miles), and Duluth East High School (2+miles). That's alot of walking. I have been thinking about walking to work (1.2 miles), when the weather gets nicer. I just googled that! I thought it was further. Now I have no excuse!! Setting goals, can be an illusive thing. I am a chart maker. I love to use my computer to do this. It is a visual thing. I make calendars, graphs, and maps. When I was... Full story

I've bumped into a lot of amazing characters over the decades. Some are scamps, tramps, winos, roustabouts, Holy Rollers, charlatans, and even the totally legit. So, it was pure fate a week ago Thursday that I was right behind Doug Dahl and his wife, Linda, waiting to get our second Covid-19 vaccine shots. Once, Mr. Dahl, as they respectfully call him in Greenbush, wanted to choke me after I sent over a completely bogus roster before a possibly tight wrestling dual in the 1980s. Those weigh-ins... In order to start our work/vacation we had to cross a 12,510 foot long bridge that reaches a height of 85 feet to get to South Padre Island, Texas. That's 2.369 miles long! The construction cost was $16 million to build it. This is the longest causeway in Texas. Highway 100, is a four-lane highway which runs east from 77 to Port Isabel/South Padre Island. It has nothing but water all around and under it! I wasn't nervous at all...ha, ha, ha! The Queen Isabella Causeway is a concrete... Full story
One of the oldest temptations in the world is the temptation for immediate satisfaction: "I want it NOW!" The world of business taps into this; Buy NOW, pay later: "No payments for the first three months!" Yea! I remember, years ago, watching an episode of All in the Family. Some of you reading this may be old enough to remember this comedy series: Archie Bunker, "Meathead!" etc. In this one episode Edith is trying to talk Archie into letting her have a "credit card" (That dates the series)....
March came in like a lamb- so hope nice weather continues all month. Special memories of Emerson Michal, my grandson, who passed away on February 26th. Emerson grew up to be an outstanding man and had a generous, loving heart. Emerson earned his Eagle Scout with the Roseau Boy Scout Troop 56 and graduated from Roseau High School. Visiting his grandfather’s grave here in the summer when he was 12-years-old he left his favorite tool, a Swiss Army knife, on the grave. Emerson’s Funeral and Memorial Service will be at Helgeson Funeral Chapel on...
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds anglers that the deadline to remove fish houses from Minnesota lakes is coming up. Although the coldest spell of winter occurred just days ago, fish house removal deadlines are set in state statute and not dependent upon seasonal conditions. The removal deadline in the southern two-thirds of the state is the end of the day Monday, March 1. Anglers in this area should note it’s just one day after the close of the walleye-fishing season. In the northern one-third of the state — which is def...

Submitted by Troy Schwehr On behalf of my father, Ronald Schwehr, I am honored and humbled to accept his nomination into the Minnesota Babe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame. I accept this as my father has deteriorated in health due to onset of Alzheimer's over the past five years. He is now living in Valley City, N.D. at a Veterans home. Although my father was never one for awards or accolades, I believe this honor is very deserving and is a reflection of the almost 40 years of dedication and love he...
